Air filter question

a buddy of mine decided to put a BHAF on his 2002 CTD. What it actually is is a filter off of a big rig. The type that slides in the air cleaner on side of truck. It was a lot cheaper than an air box ($63), and makes the turbo sound Kick ***! My question is if this could cause any problems. It is in the open in the engine compartment. It basically replaced the stock air box. The Intake hose runs from the filter to the turbo. Do you think it is a safe-enough set up for me to run for a while?

I have the same thing and you are fine to run it like that. After awhile I made a heat shield for it to keep it from sucking in the hot air off of the turbo. It was only like $10 to make. It was made out of a piece of flat tin

Yup.... BHAF, pretty good mod for the dollar, had mine on for about 4 years and atleast 50k miles on the same filter. Picked it up at a fleet shop for $38.

I did the same thing with a S&B filter and made a heat shield out of tin too.

Here's a link to making a shield, should help keep the air filter from melting from the heat from the turbo

I think the number is 2790. Different suppliers add a number to the beginning or end sometimes.

A heat shield is a good idea, especially if you ever go muddin, with no guard it can suck up water. Love mine
