2001 Boost Elbow.
2001 Boost Elbow.
Just installed my Edge EZ tonight and it looks like my 2001 cannot use the boost elbow setup that comes with the EZ. Is a turnbuckle the only way to go to up the boost or are there other ways to do it with my truck? What is the safest/most efficient boost max level for my truck? If the turnbuckle is the best route to explore, could somebody point me in the right direction in terms of the size of the turnbuckle and how to install it? Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Straight from the edge website.

Turnbuckle page

I'm using this and can hit 26 psi at 5000' elevation on an otherwise stock 2001.5.
Re:2001 Boost Elbow.
What is the maximum safe boost level with our trucks? With the turnbuckle, do you just keep adjusting it until you get the maximum boost that you are looking for or is there a more scientific way to do it? Finally, and I may be crazy, but I seem to remember that somebody recommended placing a spent .22 cartridge in the boost line to do the same job as the turnbuckle? Any thoughts on that one?
Re:2001 Boost Elbow.
I think I've heard if you stay under 30 with the HY you'd be o.k. I think you can do the .22 shell deal, but the turnbuckle cost me a buck and a half and didn't have to touch a wrench to put on (or take it off if it needs to go to the dealer).

Dave,

I'd be careful about using the turnbuckle described in the Edge link. It looks like their method just disables the wastegate, thus there is nothing to limit maximum boost.

Dave,
I'd be careful about using the turnbuckle described in the Edge link. It looks like their method just disables the wastegate, thus there is nothing to limit maximum boost.

I've seen pics of the turnbuckle with a spring. (Edge's doesn't have the spring though), it still allows the wastegate to open, but at higher boost level.
The spring provides resistance to get to higher boost.
With Edge's method, as long as you don't tighten the turnbuckle all the way, the wastegate is still allowed to open, just later.
The .22 shell disables the wastegate function completely.
I will go with the turnbuckle and spring, or the Turbomaster when my time to BOMB comes around.

Re:2001 Boost Elbow.
I connected a turnbuckle today when I got home from work and before I read the latest posts on this subject with the suggestions about using the turnbuckle and a spring. At WOT I got 30lbs boost which makes me nervous. I think tomorrow I will get a spring and try to get the max boost down a little. I would feel better in the 25lb range if the maximum safe boost is 30lbs as posted above.
Re:2001 Boost Elbow.
Good idea Dave, get the spring. :P
When I looked at Edge's pic, it looked like the turnbuckle would prevent the wastegate from opening. I suppose if the turnbuckle is loose enough, the wastegate could open a little.
The big question will be how heavy of a spring to use ??? ???

I know there has been a thread or two about this sometime in the past year, and a picture (they're worth a thousand words ya know) was included more than once.

I'm 95% sure that one of them included what rating of spring to use,
maybe even a stock number or part number.

I tried a search, but didn't come up with much, except this thread of course.

Perhaps whomever posted in the thread I'm thinking about can fill in the blanks.

I just hate that dreaded CRS disease,
but I've learned to live with my disability

Re:2001 Boost Elbow.
Why not just get a turbo-master device for the wastegate?

When I had a stock turbo I used a spring and a piece of wire to make and adjustable wastegate without loosing the wastegate completely.

I think the turbo-master would be a better way to go.
