20 psi boost and then heavy black smoke :(
Waste gates do go bad occasionally. Ive read about it before. sticking open /closed.
If wastegate is bad, perfect excuse for turbo upgrade! (I have a hybrid for sale in classifieds FYI
)
That sounds like the perfect way to check it.
Let us know what is does when you try it.

do you know something we dont and are you being sarcastic? cause i dont want the guy to explode his turbo, im about 99% sure it wont....but if you know something by all means tell us.
It looks like im gonna have to do some turbo mods of some sort, i get to 20 and it wont build any more, the adr would be a badass chip if i could get it to take updates lol

No no not being sarcastic. I mean it, that does sound like a good way to check it.
take off the waste gate hose and plug it, then see if he can get past 20 lbs. If he can, i'd say its a waste gate problem IMO.
Just dont let it hit 35 lbs, these turbos wont handle much more Ive heard.
If he still cant get past 20 lbs, Hold a pipe or handle or what ever to the turbo and listen.
Although, I think if it was one of the wheels hitting the housing inside, youd prob hear it very clearly.
Could be a bearing problem also. Bad bearings not allowing the shaft to spin freely?
As for the defueling from the box, when I was messing with my HY-35 when I got a J-hook, I set the juice to defuel around 20 lbs (which is all I could get with that turbo before J-hook) and boosted to 25 when I stayed on the peddle. What im saying is that the juice couldnt defuel fast enough to keep my boost at 20. It hit 26 lbs before starting to slowely drop boost from defueling. So just FYI, be careful about leaving waste gate blocked and relying on defueling.

X 2.
The HX-35 would have boost elbow, the HY-35 on the 01/02 auto have the hard tube instead.
Im thinking it must be waste gate problem. It sounds like its sticking sometimes, and not at other times. Try by passing the waste gate and let us know. Im interested to hear what up with you rig.

Looks like this but without the black allen screw in the end. The white threaded part screws into the compressor housing.
Look familiar?
