160hp pump timing and other questions

Ok guys. I've had this truck for about 2 years. I dont think its ever been timed its whole life. It wont rev past 3k because it starts white smoking/missing/popping at right on 3k when the motors warm. Will do it at a lot lower RPM's when motor is cold. Im thinking timing. Want to do timing as soon as i can. My EGT's will also be at 1500 by the time i get to 60mph from a stop. I think timing is doing this because its not running like it should at high rpm's.

Questions for guys with 160 pumps:

1) what will your truck rev to with the 3k GSK,a nd what is your timing set at. Like i said. Mine wont pull past 3k, but i think it should free rev in park to 3400 or so when timed right?

2)Will timing it to 15.5 hurt my low end power any?

3)Will timing help my EGT's,and mileage too?

4) also, would the combo of 181 D.V.'s, and 215 injectors help my truck out much?

My truck also has a little bit of a lope to it at idle. I think it sounds awesome in gear loping like it does, but i wonder why it does it? Truck runs strong, and doesent have any problem other than high rpm high egt's when im kicking on it, and missing/popping at high rpm in park/neutral. It will outrun a stock d-max/PSD, and a lot of older modified 7.3 strokes, and things. Im just wondering if timing is the answer to most of this? My fuel mileage also isnt the greatest. 15 or so. I drive it harder than most though, but even on road trips i can only do about 18 or so. Any help is appreciated guys, and when i get it timed i will post a new thread with my results. Thanks!

Eric

Also, if anyone would be nice enough to host a video for me i would get a good sound clip of it idling, and revving, and stuff. I would appreciate it a lot if someone could. Thanks!

That popping at full throttle is the timing. Mine was doing that, until I bumped the timing up to 16.5*.
If the timing has slipped, resetting it to even stock will help mileage, but I've learned that more advance will increase the efficiency of the cummins.
Mine lopes like that too... just the nature of the beast. Ever hear a pro stock pullin tractor pull up to the sled? Does the same dern thang! I think it sounds cool! In all actuality, it lopes like that because you're lugging it a little. Next time it does that, stand on the throttle, and you'll notice that the lope disappears quickly.
You shouldn't really need larger DV's for the 215HP injectors, but if you went bigger, it might be worth the money spent.

My truck at WOT on the will rev to 3600 then it shifts. I have it timed at 17.5. Bumping the timing will not effect the low end enough for you to notice. When I first got my truck it was rock stock and it got 17-18 mpg with 33" tires. Now after all my bombs I get 21 with the 35" tires and 24 with the little 265 drag racers.. the 181dvs and injectors will help alot any improvement over stock is good. Some guys just put in bigger Dvs and are happy. More is gooder..
I dont recommend going to 17.5 on the timing with the little injectors. 15-16.5 is good..

Really appreciate the help guys! Yeah. Im hoping timing will help out with all that stuff. I also like the lope. Especially when i put it in drive, and its just idling, it sounds pretty mean. It sounds like its got a street cam in it or something. I love it On the timing, im thinking 15.5, as i dont want to go to extreme and i dont want to blow a head gasket for sure. Truck runs good now, I would just like 80 or so extra hp, and i was hoping the 215/181 combination would be a good one for that without skyrocketing EGT's, and giving me a good mixture of low, and top end. Truck runs good now, but im looking for a truck that will spool great with the hx35/16, get good mileage, run low 15's or 14's through the 1/4, and pull good all without having much of an EGT problem. I've heard the 215's shouldnt hurt EGT's because of the spray pattern they have, but i guess ill find out sometime. Im guessing the 181's will raise EGT's some, but not to much hopefully. I drive this truck every day, haul tractors/hay with it, and whatever else, so i dont want to go to extreme yet. My tranny is my biggest worry. I think ill just put a better converter in, and if it decides to take a dump later on ill have it rebuilt locally with good parts/converter when i will hopefully have the money, and be done with it for a while. Thanks for the help guys! Any guesses on how much extra power i would get from the 181/215 combo? Thanks

Well if i could get mid-low 15's id be pretty happy. If i get a wild hair, a hybrid turbo, and 370's may come later, but i dont want to kill my tranny for a little while if i can help it anyway. Think i could get low 15's with that setup? Also, hotmopar, what are your EGT's like WOT, and what kind of boost do you see? Thanks!
