Re:`96 4500-5600 Conversion Pictures

I put about 18 hours into it. I had to do some fabricating to get the old crossmember to work with the new tranny... I had to build a tranny jack and had to have 2 drive shafts modified in length. The longest part of it all was getting the NV4500 to come down to earth from the clutch. It was supposed to come right out but it didn't want it. I'm still amazed I did this in a driveway. I feel better knowing I have gone through the whole drive-line and know everything is torqued good and in great condition.

That's one big johnson trans for sure, looking good except for that chevy orange paint. Let us know how it turns out. When mine goes, will upgrade to something else for sure.

Just curious, where did you get the trans for $995? Sounds like one hell of a deal if it is in good shape. The boneyards that I have been searching through want at least 2 g's and only give a 30 day warranty. I assume it is in good condition, right? What about the clutch? Did you upgrade to the 13"?

Re:`96 4500-5600 Conversion Pictures

It looks Chevy Orange in the pictures... it's actually Ford Red. I got the transmission off of Ebay from a company called Ariel Performance. They sale whole and auction off extras and trannys from wrecked trucks etc. I went through the transmission when I got it and it looked fantastic on the inside with the normal aged look on the outside. Nothing a pressure washer didn't fix. I know of 6 other people who bought a NV5600 from this company spanning from a year back to present and they all have loved their transmissions and have had no problems with them at all. Mine shifts very smoothly and seems to be very well in good shape. It was dyno tested and again, good to go. I figured $995.00.... couldn't pass up on it. Haulin' in Dix' over there just bought one of these trannies too. It's honestly the best deal I've ever seen for a Dodge upgrade. I wouldn't go back to the fivespeed to save my life. This six speed and the power range of the 12v is excellent feeling. I bought the adapter clutch from South Bend that's the old style 12.25" with the 1-3/8 hub for money purposes. I will upgrade to the larger 13" and redrilled flywheel in the next year. I just wanted to get the truck back on the road and back to work. $650 for the clutch kit, bearings, etc, $995.00 for tranny, A few extra bucks I spent on new seals that I put in the transfer case while it was out and $53 for the new 6-speed shifter, and $170 for the lengthening and shortening of drive shafts came out to about $1,893.00

I'm going to post the rest of the pics of the finishing process in a couple of days and the final product. It looks very nice.. I think.

Ford red, that's even worse.
I need to check that site out for sure and have one on stand by. The kind of weight I pull makes me believe mine will not last long.
Was there anything else you had to change or is it pretty much a bolt in affair?

Re:`96 4500-5600 Conversion Pictures

I had to cut my reverse switch wires and extend them a couple of inches. You're supposed to use the newer 11" cross member with the NV5600 and the new tranny mount but I just fabricated the old cross member and a TH350 polyurethane mount to work. All that did was save me about $390 for the bigger crossmember which I'll prolly buy later when I put a new clutch in next year. The drive shafts obviously had to be modified in length. I used my old flywheel and all my old clutch activation hardware. I bought a new shifter for the tranny. I bought a new rubber dust cover that bolts to the floor to match the throw of the six speed. It was pretty much a bolt-on project just a couple very small and some what cheap things had to be bought. I accidently broke my 4WD indicator light switch when pulling the jack back out of the truck so I had to buy a new switch. It was pretty much down hill once the old tranny was out. I spent about $3.60 on that awesome tranny craddle in ther picture. haha That make-shift tranny jack worked like charm.

Re:`96 4500-5600 Conversion Pictures

I just received my six speed today. It is a 2001 build and looks good. It cost me $1011 plus $150 shipping. We did have a small problem, we had no fork lift and no way to get it down from the trailer it was deliverd by. It is heavy so took to to a local company with a loading dock and picked it up from there. It will be a while before I install it, but my big fear was if the five speed went out, I had nothing to replace it with.
