Question 4500 or 5600

I am planning on doing a swap from an automatic to a nv4500. What I was wondering was if it would be just as easy to swap in a 5600 out of a second gen. truck? Anyone have info on this?

They both require the same parts to make it work, what year 2nd gen you put it in, determines if you need the newer cross member for the 5600.

I would stick with a 4500 because of cost to rebuild, parts availability and with a tuned cummins, is plenty of gear for all your needs. 5600 is a little better towing stock to stock, but i think the 4500 shifts way better than the 5600.

The truck it will be going in is a 97 4x4. I think i made up my mind with the '98 and up 4500.

Is there a particular range of years with a better NV4500 than other years...

I'm thinking of doing this swap also, I'd like to know which year(s) 4500's to get...what are the most desireble NV4500's??? anyone know?

Everyone likes the 98-later 4500's because of the shorter-more sportier throw shift tower. The 94-97 towers had the shift lever that swings wide, especially 5th gear you have to reach.
That's the only difference, the rest of the tranny is the same.
