Before you replace the block heater make sure the cord is not the problem. Cords are about $15 and very easy to replace.

You can check the heater and cord with a DVM. Use the ohms setting and check the resistance in the circuit at the cord prongs and then at the heater connection itself. If you cannot find continuity, you have an open circuit and need to dig further. Checking the cord and then the heater will allow you to replace only the parts you need and nothing else.

As others have said, check the cord 1st, but it is a very simple thread out, thread in type of operation. I have changed several on the trucks over the past couple of years, and there isn't much anything to it.

Does anyone have the part number and where to buy a cord, I think mine is going out, it works half the time. I figure I would start there.

If you do have to replace the element, make sure the element doesn't touch inside the block after tightening it down.
I did that twice before I copped the clue.

My bag is marked 05081 ID#101
I bought it at Cummins, but don't remember if they used that number or a Cummins 7 digit. I'll dig through my receipts and see if I have it.
Being Cummins is a drive maybe try John Deere or Case-IH delaer. Possibly C-A-L Ranch

I have also changed out several of them and haven't seen one yet that "threads" in or out. They have a allen head that is loosened a few turns that holds a little flat piece that when the bolt is tightened it pulls against the engine block and holds the heater in. Do not loosen more than a few turns or it will fall into water jacket. There is an o-ring on the block heater that seals it. A little pry bar and it pops right out.

The cord is held on by a screw on nut.
The block heater element is as you describe.
