NV4500 to 5600 conversion
NV4500 to 5600 conversion
I'm sure this have been beat dead but i wasnt able to find anything on this topic. i have the wide cross member and i can buy the trans. all i need to know is do i need a new flywheel for the 6spd clucth and pressure plate to go on?
you will need a new flywheel. the 6 speed flywheel is thicker than the 5 speed. this means you will also need a spacer for the starter...such as the ones they sell in the 13" clutch conversion kits.
you wont need the kit...you just need the spacer from the kit. contact South Bend Clutch or Valair Inc.
the NV4500 has a 1.25" input shaft. the NV5600 has a 1.375" (upon thinking about it, you will need to double check that as some earlier 5600's had a 1.25"). when someone converts their 4500 to a 5600 CLUTCH ASSEMBLY (the conversion kit) (such as myself), they need a flywheel, a starter spacer, and a special clutch disk that will accept the 1.25" input shaft on their existing 4500 trans and have a 13" diameter as found in the 5600.
since you are replacing the entire 4500 for the 5600, you will now have a 1.375" input shaft. you will only have to worry about using a 5600 clutch assembly (at whatever HP/TQ rating you need). but in order to make it work on a truck that came with the 4500, you need the flywheel for a 5600 and that starter spacer.
talk with one of those companies and they'll set you up with that spacer.
sorry if this answer is longer than you wanted, not sure if you knew about the differences.

Well.... Good I hope, my truck still has the nv4500. But like you I scan any thread that relates to transmission mods. I believe the thread that gave me the idea about the G56 is here on DTR some where.
IIRC the guy already had the flywheel and clutch. The transfer case bracket had to moved aft and the drivelines shortened / lengthend. The transfer case shifter had to be lengthened, he used a piece of all thread. Not sure if the starter needs a spacer.
I took a look at the gear ratios they are fairly close (nv5600 vs G56) with the nv5600 OD being a little higher.
Passing interest on my part, maybe one of my down the road bombs. The NV5600 seems to be getting more rare and spendy. Said he bought a used G56 for around $2k.
