if its new, care must be taken to see if its made in china as there are many knock-offs being sold.

i'll have to do something soon, my 4th gear syncro is really bad and getting worse. if i shift slow enough the syncro can do its job. but with it getting cold its getting a little harder to do this with the characteristics that a cold diesel engine has. the real kicker is moneys tight so if i'm gonna spend some dough i'm gonna get something that last, and is work gettin in the long run. that why i'm doin the research. so i'm open to any opinions and suggestions, i was thinking about rebuilding it(NV4500) myself but i dont have the special tools to take the 5th gear nut off and all the other ****. so let me know all you guys know at the moment i'll endup gettin an eaton-fuller and bell housing and **** to do it right

You can get the flywheel redrilled for the six speed, SBC can do it, they are also great to do business with. If you want you can also get a clutch from SBC that has the disk for the larger input shaft and uses the five speed clutch. If you are 4wd you will need to lengthen the 4wd control shaft, and will have to make a small adaptor for the rear mount about 4 by 5 inches with six holes. Rear drive shaft needs to be shortened, front shaft lengthened. It is a good swap. Best mod I did to mine, have about 300k on the conversion.

I don't know about that.... I paid $1100 for the trans, forget the clutch cost from SBC, but it took about six hours to install and the next day to get the two drive shafts back. They were between $100 and $150 for both. It was well worth the money and time to make the mod. Then towing heavy (30,000+) I could lay into it in overdrive and not worry about fifth gear.

I would buy a couple spares for $1100. It would cost him around $1500 to get a rebuilt 5 speed. $2500 for the tranny + $800 or more for the core + new flywheel and clutch for $800 or more = at least 3 times more. And I could pull the old nv4500 and put one back in it's place in 3-4 hours. If he's not hotshotting and pull 30k all the time. All the rebuilds would have the 5th gear nut fix in them. If he's not have to down shift all the time, then it's probley not worth it to him.

Whatever, he asked about the conversion. I told him what I knew. One tip though, if you stay with the 4500 have the flywheel machined to accept a ford pilot bearing and get rid of the troublesome needle bearing.

i just relized i dont have any info about my truck up here, and i'm not computer savy enough get it to display under my posts, so, i have a 2000 3500 2wd i think i have 3.73's but the sticker in my glover box says 3.54 or something like that. i have the wide cross memeber. as far as i've seen and read and agree with is the 4500 is junk not worth keeping. and the upgrade to the 5600 i need to 1. drill and tap my flywheel and get a clutch and trans, and its done and said with(correct me if i'm wrong) or i could 2. get the bigger flywheel and clutch and get a starter spacer, and the trans and be done(one again correct me if i'm wrong) or 3. do what ever i need to to use the g56 or 4. get an eaton fuller. need some opinions here.

a synchronizer is a wear item in the trans, just because its going out shouldnt warrant a conversion....unless you are against the NV4500. lets say you get the NV5600, a synchro can still go out in that trans as well!
IIRC, 'blackdiesel' grenaded a couple NV5600's. is that right 'blackdiesel'? (sorry in advance if im wrong!)
i guess what im wondering is why are you, 'numbers47', against the nv4500? maybe youre not? i say get the NV4500 rebuilt and be done with it....they have a 5th gear issue (in stock form) but can be resolved with quad4x4's fix.
