Windows network/firewall question
Ok, I'm no whiz with computers, but I can usually get them to do what I want them to do with some fiddling around. I've been sharing my high-speed internet connection with my laptop and have had no problems. This system is Windows XP and the laptop is an older IMB Thinkpad 600x running Win 98se. For some reason, I've lost the connection. It shows good on the host, but the laptop won't dive in. It seems like windows firewall is blocking access, but I'm not sure and the windows firewall controls don't seem to make anything change, but of course, that could be 'cause I don't know what I'm doing...Any suggestions?

Are you sharing the internet connection with a hub/router?? Normal hubs ip addresses are set to 192.168.1.1 click start-run type cmd and hit enter.... On the black screen that pops up type ping 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. If you get a reply than the connection is enabled try this first.... If no connection (timed out) check cables

I knew I left some stuff out. I've got two network cards in the host and have been usign a crossover-type cable headed to the laptop. As soon as I plug it in, Win XP happily informs me that network connection two is connected at 100mbps. Before, the laptop would catch prime and take off with no problems. Problem is, I can't seem to disable the firewall to see if that's it. Something about group control...lemmie look closer.
oh, thanks for the reply, btw!

Does the account you are using with XP have admin rights on the compuer you are using?
If not, you might not be able to disable the firewall if a GPO/rule was checked. Sometimes windows will enable the firewall when ugrading/updating XP.

With both computers connected as you usually had do this:
XP-Box: Click "start" "run" enter "cmd" and click OK- a black MS-DOS window should appear.
Type "ipconfig" then hit enter- post the result of this window here
Win98 Box- Click "start"-"Programs" look for MS-DOS Prompt (could also be under Accessories) and enter "ipconfig" there too- please do post the results too.
(I want to see whether these two are in the same subnet, got the gateway right etc)

Thanks for all the replies! I've been under the weather lately, so it's hard to generate the energy to be mad at an inanimate object like a computer, hehe. Anyway, The host computer is running the BETA of Windows Onecare, which is a pretty cool product. I somehow managed to get it to give me control of Windows Firewall so I could shut it down. Now, the network works just fine. So, anybody know how to tell Windows Firewall to let my laptop share the connection? It's got me baffled, 'course, I am on pain-killers
thanks!
