What does everybody do?
Construction/ Carpentry and Lobstering when I'm home.
6 months a year I'm out to sea as a Marine Engineer. Work on the biggest diesels in the world, steam plants, and large aero derivative gas turbines while seeing the world. You get 6 months of paid vacation a year, get to weld, fix stuff, play with automation, operate/maintain equipment, and the pay ain't bad either

I am 16 and work for my dad and grandpa on the farm for right now, but i plan to be a diesel mechanic like my dad and maybe open my own diesel performance shop someday, thats my dream anways...
I've been landscaping for twelve years. It's not the easiest job in the world but I enjoy going to work most days. That's the important thing. If you love to do it and you can take care of your family, then go for it. No matter what "it" is.
Returning college student working on my degree in Technology education, but I use to do HVAC and still hold a journeyman sheet metal license and before that I was a Diesel heavy equipment mechanic.
I've always been told to have a different hobby than what you do all week at work. Meaning a motorcycle mechanic who deals with motorcyles all week probably wouldn't enjoy riding and working on them as a hobby on the weekends.
As for myself I have a desk job at a law office. I'll have a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice come next May...hopefully. From there I'm not sure what I'll do. From ages 16-21 I worked in the automotive repair field at independent shops.
Good luck with your decisions.

I hold 5 certifications for welding, the one thing that an older guy told me was this. In welding you are merely making a casting without a mold. That helped me think about the process. If you don't understand the process of what you are trying to accomplish then you are not going to accomplish much. Go learn it !
Hey guys I appreciate all the input! Its been very helpful.
believe it or not ive done most of these things
Done landscaping on the side, worked as a tig welder for a bike shop, mechanic for two yrs, got up hay every summer and now Im a tow truck driver.....

got a ride to college on a music scholarship... got the degree, then went to A&P mechanic (aviation) school and got my certificates... Was wrenching at various places / airports for a few years while teaching/playing/gigging on the side then the economy took a dump 2 years ago I saw the writing on the wall.. looked for a FT job back in aviation and have been working at the place that gave me a job ever since...
I started out as a maintenance tech rep and traveled around overseeing new aircraft retrofits and new installs, now promoted as field engineer for in flight entertainment systems on boeing and airbus aircraft,,,, based out of SFO. I don't do any more wrenching or anything with tools in my current position. I might work with scopes and meters every now and again but all in all it is a lot of data crunching/analysis/planning for systemic fixes... ooh did I mention daily conference calls and reports???

US MMA is correct in a way where 40 is the new 30... We also have a phenomenon called education inflation... the 4 year degree is the new HS diploma unfortunately. Try to get it as quick as possible in ANYTHING you're interested in and as cheap as possible... (JC then transfer to state college) It will open up doors down the road combined with tech skills/certs. It worked out well for me with that angle anyway...
