im about to put down a lot of rock at my house is it best to use a product like preen and/or plastic under the rock to prevent weeds? What products do you guys use to keep grass green?

 

I think screen works better. It lets water drain through. Especially if you're putting down any bark/mulch. With plastic, it can make a puddle and/or stream underneath and wash out mulch, gravel and sand.

use a weed barrier it will allow water thru

 

Herbacide and then weed barrier......or dusting of lime then weed barrier

 

Use some form of a soil sterilization and sprinkle it in your gravel and keep the weeds down. This is a link too a pdf for one of the better ones that is granule and be done with it.

Oh and if you want a "natural" weed preventer use corn gluten meal. It is a pre emergent weed controller so you need too put it down after you work the soil and before you put the rock down and just keep sprinkling it on though the rock. This is a more maintenance way vs the other i posted wich is a year kill for weeds and grass and the other is non selective so it will kill any thing you put it on its not picky..
