Transfer case fluid drain trick.

I came up with this and it worked pretty well. I wanted to try and keep the fluid off of the skid plate. I used a piece of scrap 2" DVW. I cut a notch so I could get the wrench on the drain plug with it in place. I drilled 2 holes in the cut part and used soft steel wire to hold it around the drain plug casting. It's just enough of an angle so that the fluid runs out the end an into a drain pan. It comes out pretty fast so don't put the drain pan too close to the pipe. (I did this to eliminate a mess and caused another one instead. ) I'll know better next time.

Groovy idea. Someday I might use it, but so far, when fluid has had to come out of there I already had the skid plate off because I was pulling the tranny. Never occurred to me I might need to drain it with the skid plate on. Maybe I'm in my tranny too much.

I'll have to rig up something like this. I'm planning to do the job in the next few weeks. Thanks, Srigs

I think it's time to do my front axle and transfer case fluid. They've only got 66k miles on the original fluid.

The first time I drained mine, I just chucked the skid plate. But mine never goes off road either. That's a cool idea. Maybe Jack could put that in the tech facts section or handy tool section somewhere so others will get the idea.

Good idea, I do have some scrap pvc pipe.

Tony try a 3/4" "street elbow", should screw right into the hole. Ace or any hardware will have one. You still have to pour slowly so air can get in the case. Next I'm thinking of using a 3 or 4 inch, 3/4" nipple with a union to screw the bottle right to the case, and maybe punch a hole in the bottle while it's filling. I just can't bring myself to buy a $25 suction gun that sits around leaking all year. At least until I get some sore of "shop" set up where it wouldn't be getting moved around all the time. I'm told the garage is mine to do what I want with, until there's some crap to pile in there........ darn it, you got me going....

That's a great idea! Especially since I have had 5 qt's of ATF+4 setting on the rear floorboards for over a week that have been waiting for me to get the time to actually change it out.

thanks for saving me the mess!

Well, I bought a Sta Lube gear oil dispenser pump a long time ago from Checker Auto Parts. It will fit a quart as well as a gallon jug. It has a plastic end that holds the hose in the hole and you just pump it up and down. It gets almost all of the oil out of the container. There's enough room under our trucks for this to fit but I use quarts so it's a little shorter. I also have one for gear lube too.
