Transfer case drain plug location
Hi everyone
I want to change out the fluid on a 241 D HD transfer case (99 Deisel Ram). This should be pretty straight forward but the picture in the service manual is a "typical" picture and it looks a bit different from the actual transfer case. I just don't feel like loosening off some set screw that holds a bunch of internals in place. Is the drain plug the plug on the bottom of the rear case that takes a 10mm allen wrench? Filler plug takes the same wrench? And it looks like the skid plate should be removed to avoid a heck of a mess?
Thanks in advance for any help on this

You are correct. The drain plug is at the bottom rear of the case and it's the same type of plug as the fill plug. It is a good idea to remove the skid plate, but not neceassary.

Just make sure you remove the filler plug first, THEN the drain plug. My filler plug is stuck and if I would have removed the drain and not having a way to refill the case would have been BAD.... still considering what MY options are...

Undoing the filler first lets the fluid flow better, too. I just fold some heavy cardboard in a 'V' to flow fluid (like an aquaduct) over skid plate and into a pan.

I drained factory fluid at 20,000 miles and was shocked. It was black, burnt, and ugly. (I use 4x4 often... 3-4 times a week).
Now use Amsoil ATF and have worked my way up to 50,000 mile changes with good looking fluid.

Hi, I'm getting ready to change my transfer case fluid. Any tips? How much fluid does it hold? 10mm allen on the fill and drain plugs? Thx

Yes, 10 mm hex.
I don't have FSM here so working from memory.... pretty sure it's 2.5 - 3 qts. ATF. If you have a HD transfer case, you'll need an extra qt.
