Stupid is as Stupid Does

Okay, first a caveat, this has nothing to do with me. I know we have a good number of mechanics on DTR and I was wonderin'. Earlier today I was at the local True Value and browsing. Made my way back to the motor oils, chain bar lube, etc. Saw the bottles of radiator stop leak (does that stuff work anyway?) and the green slime for tires. Got to thinking and I'm curious. Any mechanics here ever had someone with engine problems and found that they put something stupid in the crankcase to stop a leak. Or tranny, raidiator, etc. I'm just curious. Post your funny repair finds.

Ive used the Bars Leak stuff twice with success. Once on a beater and once on a truck I was about to get rid of. Any other time I fix the leak, I dont like the idea of dumping crap in my radiator.

We had a 64 Chevy when I was a kid. It had to have at least a million miles on it. I was too young at the time, but my dad told me a story that it used to have abad blowby problem. The guy down at the DX station (I remember that) sold him a can of something to pour in the tank, that included some sort of lead ball. He said wou could hear the ball rollong in the tank for several day, but when the sound wen't away, the blowby stopped. He said we had that car about 5 or so years after that can of stuff with the ball and it never lost another drop of oil again.

Wdit, it was a Biscayne. 3 on the tree, strait 6. It was very embarassing to be dropped off in that thing at school.
