Since I joined DTR, I have noticed that I get more pop ups than I like (1 is tooooo many). Anyone know how I can get rid of these annoyances for free? I've tried a few free pop up killers but with no success. Anyone know of a good FREE one? thanks

I'm not sure why you'd be getting more popups since using the DTR. That would have to be something unrelated to this, because we do not have pop-up ads.

 

What search engine do you use. I like "google".
If you go to www.google.com, they have a great toolbar (free) that has a very affective pop up blocker.

Pop up stopper free edition. Don't get pop ups.

 

Try this. It searches for mods done to your Windows software. What it finds are entries that feed cookie servers on the network. They sit on the network and collect everyones cookies, which show sites that you've been to and logged on to in one way or another.
I found over a hundred entries in my Windows software and blew them away.

Ok thanks guys. I guess the pop ups started when I actually started using my computer---the only place that I'd go to was this site (plus or minus a few more). I guess I got something from another site. So it was not this site's fault, just mine.

theres a program out there called "Adaware" that will remove spyware and adware from your computer.

these type of programs are what can cause alot of pop up ads.

one thing, if you have something like Kazaa/Morpheus/Limewire, they wont work once you remove the spyware

edit: if you REALLY hate popups, theres another program called "popup kill". it wont allow any new windows to open. however, when you open a link you will have hold the "CNTRL" button to disable it.

I just started using Mozilla on one of my computers. Their browser has pop up controls and their email program controls junk mail.

 

I use 2 programs. Pop-Up Stopper from Panicware, and Ad-Aware from Lavasoft. Both are shareware programs, and both are very effective. The former grabs 95% of the adds and lets you know with a short "Bzzzt!" sound. The latter scans your registry and disk for spyware programs and cookies. It's amazing how much garbage you can pick up on an evening's of browsing. Highly recommend them along with a firewall if you don't already have one up. Zone Alarm is what I run.

Just remember, if you don't allow cookies on your machine, you won't be able to post. A lot of people worry that cookies are this bad horrible thing where people track your every existance. Not true. Most cookies are used to keep you logged into a site, or to provide custom content based on what you choose. They aren't going to get the name and address of your grandmother by putting a cookie on your machine.

This site uses cookies on every page, and we do it so you know what posts are new, or what classifieds, or what pictures are new since your last visit. We use them to make sure you're the same person on every click so your login security isn't comprimised.

If you're going to worry about stuff, it had better be embedded web page code like vb scripts, active x controls etc. THOSE are what's dangerous.
