Special purpose rear hitch...

Is there such a thing? One besides a regular ball hitch?

I don't have tow hooks but need to drag some roots out of the ground, and I want to use the rear hitch point to tie up to but I've haven't bought a ball for it yet.

Should I buy the most commonly used size ball? If so what size is most common? A 2"? Which size should I buy that would serve me best down the road?

Or, is there another special non-ball *rear* hitch better suited for tieing a tow rope to?

I'd like to buy the most commonly used ball for it and tie up to that, that way I'd have it to use later for a trailer when I needed it.

Thanks alot in advance for any help.

DT.

DO NOT USE A BALL FOR SECURING A STRAP

Get a shackle from a farm store (Tractor Supply Co., etc) and use that to secure the strap to the draw bar. straps have a nasty tendency to slip off of hitch ***** and can do some serious damage flying through the air.

again, NEVER, NEVER attach a strap or chain to a ball on the drawbar. ***** have snapped and killed people in the drivers seat. Very dangerous.

You can get a warn shackle bracket (like shown below) or just install the hitch pin through the loop in the strap.

http://www.warn.com/truck/accessories/shackle.shtml

Also, always hang a blanket or somehing heavy on a strap so that if it snaps it will fall to the ground.

I just put the pin through the loop for most cases. For heavier pulls, I would like to have an insert, and put my shackle on it.

Shackle attachment -

I got a shackle at a local farm - ag supply store and I just use a regular drawbar without a ball in it to attach the shackle to - the hitch pin that attaches the drawbar into the receiver might bend with the pull on the center of it, but by using the drawbar, available cheap anywhere hitch parts are sold (Wal-Mart) you get the full strength of the receiver hitch and have a 1" hole in a substantially thick plate to attach the shackle through. I have carried this same set-up with the last 4 trucks or so I have had, as I have traded trucks. Nice thing - the 2" receiver hitches are standardized!

Hey Tillet,

Can't quite picture your description, got any picts?

Thanks,

Here is what I use to tow with.
I usually leave it open, I have had a number of small cars impaled on it in parking lots.
