Safe Trucks

This past Friday, I had to leave Albuquerque and make a quick run to Arlington TX. Gandpa's not doing well, but at 96 years old it's to be expected.

Anyway, we were in our '99 Stratus, about 40 miles east of Albuquerque on I40 when I moved from the right lane to the left to pass a vehicle ahead of me. As I get past him, I saw in my mirror a 1/2-ton Dodge pickup behind me. Then I noticed rubber coming from under his tires and was thinking "I didn't see any rubber pieces on the road" and then realized he had just had a blowout - the right-rear tire - at 75 - 80 mph. His truck started swerving and went to the center median and rolled probably three times. It stopped about halfway into the left lane of the west-bound lanes. By the time I could get stopped and turned around, other guys (truckers) had gotten stopped and over to the now severly beaten pickup. They pulled the driver's door open and the driver stepped out UNHURT!!. Probably a little bruised, but no blood, guts or gore. After he had been out for a couple of minutes, I told him he needed to go home and change his shorts.

These seem to be pretty good trucks. I think I'll keep it.

He obviously had his seat belt on. Hope I never have to test my truck this way.

Re:Safe Trucks

That happened to me last year (kinda), cut down the right rear, hit a piece of flat metal on the road and it cut a hole in the sidewall of a brand new 37" Swamper big enough to put your head through.

Never got squirrelly though, just noticed the right rear seemed awful low and a lot of extra drag......

Re:Safe Trucks

Thats the good thing about the bigger tires that if you hit something or run something over you wont have a blow to were you will be off the road. Its got enough strengh to hold up for a while.

Re:Safe Trucks

I too was in a very serious accident back in 1997 and was driving a Dodge Ram 1500 gasser....I walked away from it with a scratch on my face, sore muscles and soiled shorts but the truck was a loss. It was then that I realized the value of these trucks and swear by the surefootedness and passenger protection they offer.

My motto: Drive a Ram, say a prayer for the guy who crosses the centerline 'cause he's gonna need it, and carry a spare set of shorts in the glove box. (or if ya drive a 6.0 Powerstroke, just have them shorts scotchguarded, it'll save ya thousands) ;D

[/quote]Sorry Hoss had to do it. I’m on the road all next week, so I will not be able to read any of your brands of humor. So I thought I would see if I could rattle your cage this week. Got to go to Loveland CO. for training, ;D It’s a ruff job but somebody’s got to do it. 8)
