Planning a trip to Costa Rica

Hey yall. One of my friends is going to Costa Rica for 3 months to study spanish and she invited me down there during spring break. I have no idea what I need to do to go. Only place I've ever been to outside of the U.S.A. is the Bahamas and I don't remember if I had to have a passport or not (I don't think I did). What all would I need to get in order to go down there? I'm really looking forward to this trip even though it's gonna cost me a small fortune. I've never been anywhere on my own (always with the folks) so this is gonna be an experience for me. I'm really proud of my friend because she is going down there all by herself. She's even gonna miss her 21st birthday with her parents because of it (it's the 5th). Thanks for the help yall.

Thanks. From what I've read so far, all I'll need is a passport that won't expire for at least 90 days after I arrive there. Thanks.

I've been to Panama (which borders Costa Rica)-
All I can say is be careful where you go and try to go in groups. Alot of drugs come from the area- if you go to the wrong place at the wrong time (there are lots of them, believe me)- they'll shoot you without even blinking.
The cops in Panama were exremely crooked and would mess with you for being American and try to get money out of you. Me personally- they can keep South America....

Well, my friend is staying with a family so I'm gonna stay with them and I don't plan on leaving the house until she gets out of school for the day. Then we might hit up the beaches or a couple of bars or something.

I had a friend that visited Costa Rica on a scuba diving trip. He came home, sold everything he had and moved there permanently.

As far as I know he still lives there and loves it.

LOL. I don't think I'm gonna go to quite that extreme. I'd miss Texas to much.
