A man who owns a local recycle yard told me about 6-8 months ago it was now illegal to use freon bottles for air.

He said if I got caught with one probably nothing would be done, but if he got caught with one they'd probably make an example out of him!

Might want to double check, but I think he said it was a federal law.

They always have been as far as I remember, back in the early 70's I got them from work and they were easy to convert for air storage because the post valve had a 3/8" FIP thread right in the tank so it was easy to install your own setup but by about 1975 they all came with the valve welded into the neck so they could not be removed so you had to connect through the ¼ male flare.

Also if you look at the tank you will find a burst disk somewhere on the tank that will prevent you from over pressuring the tank.
I used to charge mine to 175 PSI.

All of the 30 # R-22 cylinders I get now also have a check valve built in to the valve so you cannot put pressure back into the tank.

But it is easy to weld a bung into the top of the tank after removing the old one.

The only concern I would have would be rust in the tank after the welding was finished because as with any steel tank anytime it is under pressure the rate that it will rust will be greatly accelerated.

Quote:
Take a couple road flares tape them to the outside and light them. Next you walk about 50-100 yards back and shot. They don't blow up, they just light off a fire and every time you shot it after that it flares up. It cool.

I know this sounds really neat thing to do but PLEASE DO NOT DO IT.
The things we used to get away with when we were a kid you cannot get away with now.

If you ever got caught with this in your possession you would have yourself a world of expensive problems with the Police, BATF, FBI and ect.
They would see this as an explosive device and you as a terrorist.

It has happened to a friend of mine, he took apart some M-80’s and tried to make a bigger firecracker.
He was treated like a criminal and it cost tens of thousands of dollars and he can never own a handgun, all for a prank we all used to do when we were younger.

Also NEVER try to weld on anything that used to contain anything flammable, it takes a special procedure, you need to purge the tank with an inert gas to displace any of the remaining vapors left in the tank or it will go BOOM

200 a ton? Don't know why you would do that. At the yard in Fontana, CA they are paying $460 a ton. Much better than 200.

I don't think that at $460 a ton I could haul enough to make up the difference in fuel to get from NH to CA. At $200 a ton I only have to go 1 mile, and that price was a month ago. They pay more about 60 miles from here but not enough to make up the fuel, never mind the time it take to drive the 120 miles.
