old 20lb propane bottles

ok guys what can these old BBQ bottles be used for. I have 3-4 of em that are too old to fill now. Should I use em as air tanks on my compressor or???

Lets hear your ideas.

Take em to one of those places that you trade in your empty one for a full one and presto, new tanks.

they work great as air tanks you could even put a pair on a separate leg of a system, fill them and then shut them off, air in case your compressor ever goes bad.

If they are too old to fill with propane why would you put 120+ PSI in them to have a bomb laying around.

Cut them in half and make flower pots for the wife. They like stuff like that made from old tires, propane bottles and tree stumps!

Actually, it's not the tanks that go "bad" it's the valves on top.

If you did a bit of searching you could take them in and have them re-certified.

There is a place around here that will screw in a new valve, and do a vacuume purge and stamp the cylinder for another 10 years for around $15

They also make excellent reservoirs for small hydraulic systems. take out the valve, add the appropriate pipe fittings, clean them out good, and there you go.

We have used them for oil reserve on 1 ton dump decks for years.

It would be cool if you could use them to suck oil or tranny fluid out the dipstic tube. Not sure how to creat enough vaccum in one though.

Ohhhh, I thought they were bad from rusting out. They would make a pretty hoss portable air cylinder. If you got enough of them you could take them out to the ocean and raise old ship wrecks. A couple of zip ties and 100 or so cylinders and I bet you could get a Bayliner off the bottom. You could take a few of the little green ones and make a SCUBA tank. The possibilities are endless!
