Oil filter comparo, seen it?

I think it was on a jeep forum but a guy was doing oil filter flow testing. He used cheapo 10/30 at room temp 70 degrees. the test flowed oil out a centrifugal pump thru the filters back to a bucket where it was picked up again and repumped. There were guages installed pre filter and post with some type of restrictor to allow pressure post filter. He tested many, fram, wix, purolator, Bosch,K&N, you name it. All tests produced 40 psi in to the filters and most 28 to 32 out including the wix/napa with the exception of Fram. The regular orange filter produced minimual restriction and allowed for around 35 psi out. This proves his theory of them not filtering worth beans he said. He also tested a Fram xtra guard or what ever they are, this was scary, it produced only 18 psi return. He did mention filter bypass issues and was going to heat the oil next and see what he came up with. I will look for the link and forward it if I find it again. Real interesting reading.

I would like to see that, sounds like his preliminary results are pretty much spot on. I often wonder if the guys who make filters like Fram, actually run them on their own vehicles.

I guess if you trade your vehicle in every 2 years for a new one, you would think those filters would be just fine.

Lots of talk on the Oil itself, The Filter? Not so much..............
You guys have me wondering if I should go out and get one and swap it out now?
Got about 700 miles into this change.

To avoid just turning this thread into a Fram bash-fest let me put a disclaimer in first; just because the filter has lower resistence doesn't mean it doesn't filter as well. I can put a plate of steel in there that will flow nothing at all- that doesn't mean it's filtering the oil real good. The Fram might be better designed than Wix or Purolator.

Anyways, I know somebody (the guy who got me into these trucks in the first place) that took his 'new' Cummins into a mechanic's shop for a oil change. They put a Fram oil filter on his truck. The filter was sucked into the engine after a few hundred miles; in short, he got really shafted. It wasn't covered under warranty since a dealer didn't do the change, so he had to sue the mechanic over the $20,000 repair bill... In the end, he had to go halves with the mechanic for a new engine...

And the engine he had in his first gen had over a million miles on it when he accidently fell asleep and drove off a bridge into the ocean.

Oh, and how's Baldwin? That's what I got from the Cummins dudes...

Your call, but I would change it out if it were me. Do a search here on Fram and you will see that we have been talking about how bad they are for the Cummins, for several years now.

They may very well have changed their construction since all the broo haha over them coming apart and damaging a few of these trucks. But considering the cost of a good filter, why worry about it ?

That's what I was thinking, just need to see where to pick up the Fleetguards. I like my truck like it is (reliable and running good)

Thanks Larry.
