I had been wondering why my Windows XP kept telling me my security definitions were not up to date. I have automatic live update enabled in Norton Antivirus 2004, yet is says "updating". I ran two manual live updates, each time it updated several things.

Yet, now I get an error running the live update button in the pop up window box:

"USButtonRentalExpiredSS"

I did a google search on this, and found a couple of forums where it was suggested that this is caused by a virus. I searched Norton's site, but the document that seems to address this won't come up. One of the forum responders had MORE problems when he uninstalled and reinstalled.

Any quick fixes for this? I am BAD with computers, but, now I don't know how far out of date my definitions are. FWIW, I haven't done (knowingly) a live update since I installed Service Pak 2 last month - could it be related?

 

If your going to use Norton, be sure the SP2 security program knows. Go to Control Panel and check "Security Center", and see how it's set up.

 

It knows, and it knows it isn't autoupdating, hence the warning.

 

Click here. It will take you to the Symantec Intelligent Updater. You download the file for your Operating System. It is a .exe file that you run and it updates your virus definitions that way. I use it every couple of days for my anti virus.

 

I downloaded it. Now, I can just click on that icon anytime, and it will go get the updates?

No. That file contains the definitions up to the date the file was made. You will have to download the new file to get the new virus definitions. They come out with new definitions every few days, sometimes daily. Just bookmark the link above and check it every few days, thats what I do. On the download page there is a date of when the file was made.

 

Hopefully, you'll have better luck resolving your problems with Norton than I did. After renewing my "subscription," it caused a ton of problems on my computer. I upgraded to XP (from Me), bought the new version of Norton, and it caused even more problems.

I have since gone with ZoneAlarm Security Suite, dumped Internet Explorer and Outlook in favor of Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird. It's a much better combo, IMHO.

Not too impressed with McAfee, either - picked up a bunch of trojans/spyware on the work computer today while checking Autotrader.com. I'm sure that'll make the tech guys real happy when I call them on Monday.....

 

So when you download the new one, does it overwrite the old one, including the icon, or do I have to manually send the old one to the recycle bin?

 

I usually archive them. I save them in a seperate folder I called VIRUS UPDATE. I also rename the file with the date to keep track of them. It does not overwrite the old one. Here is a screen shot of how I do mine.

 

Updates are usually posted for auto update Wed afternoon unless there is a serious problem. Anyhow that is the way it used to be...

I read an interesting thing on the Norton website. The intelligent updater vs. Live update. Live Update is updated with new virus definitions weekly. Intelligent updater is updated daily.
