Norton Security Alert?

My Norton Firewall security thing started flashing and said I have a update I needed to do as this Trojan thing is a RAPIDY SPREADING THREAT. I have everything on automatic update and it is up to date.

Anyone else get this today?

It's propaganda. Norton has got to be the worst anti virus software. Try and uninstall it when you get something new- such as PC-cillin from Trend Micro (I feel the best). Norton puts files everywhere in your system.

Norton is well known for being a a HUGE Resource Hog on your system, I had it and will never run it on a system of mine again. Like Marine say's it places a tremendous amount of info on your PC and uses vast resources when it runs.

Lots of better products out there

I use Avast Antivirus. Its a free down load for personal use, automatic updates for free all you have to do is regester. Been useing it for 2 years now and love it.

Folks, saying that Norton's crap and he should ditch it doesn't answer his question. Not helpful at all.

Geico266, while you may have the automatic update enabled, it typically only downloads newer anti-virus definitions. You'd do well to do a manual update a minimum of once a week to ensure you have the latest program updates, the latest intrusion signatures, as well as trusted application lists. This is important as some updates require a system reboot that would not be initiated with the standard automatic update.

A Trojan is typically NOT a virus but more of a firewall concern. See ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_horse_(computing)

What you're seeing is normal operation.

Run a manual live-update and you'll most likely see a list of things that need updating.

Did you in fact see updates other than the anti-virus definitions?

I disagree, getting rid of that great white whale of a system hog, would be beneficial to his system AND in that regard VERY helpful

I've been running no anti-virus for going on five months now with this computer.

With extensive Peer to Peer file sharing, Internet use and Newsgroup operation. Seems to be as clean as a whistle to me.

So if I were an ignorant Dodge CTD owner who went to a run-of-the-mill diesel website asking about the normal crank case vent dribble, and were told to dump that trash and buy a Ferd . . . . . .. . ya know what I mean?

Yes, Norton Security is a resource hog compared to a basic anti-virus. But Norton Security is not just an anti-virus. It's a Inbound and outbound firewall, anti-virus program that does a LOT more than the freeware stuff available. The latest versions include filtering/blocking of adware and spyware as well.

IMO, NOD32 http://www.eset.com/ is far superior to that mentioned in this thread hands down.

My point is that the fella has Norton and needed help with it, not suggestions he's wasted his hard-earned money.

Can I ask a dumb question? How can a company provide free anti virus software with updates and make money or care enough to stay on top of threats? Cause they are nice people?
