No Dually fenders - Illegal?

While I'm prepping my truck for painting, I have the dually fenders off. My brother tells me it's illegal to drive it without the fenders. He is such a BSer that I always need to verify what he says. Any LEO's on here know for sure?

Thanks

Edwin

Yes its illegal - you need at least some full length and width mud flaps. I don't know of the specific law but you can't have your drive tires exposed so theyre sending road stuff flying back at the cars behind you.

I think that it probably depends on the state, but I always hear that the full-length mudflap rule only applies to vehicles oh-so-far off the ground.

Then again, like any vehicle modification, most cops won't care, but if the cop does care, then it really doesn't matter what the letter of the law is...

Texas requires the mud flaps on all dual wheeled vehicles. Kansas might be different. A call to the local DMV might be in order?

Probably the same everywhere on that sort of thing. Here, the tire cant protrude from the outermost part of the body, the other law to cover would be you can't subtract from safety features a vehicle was built with.

Edwin, yes its illegal , but you can hand some "temp" mudflaps or something, as long as it blocks road debris from being thrown at teh vehicles behind you.
Donnt know how "fussy" the LEO's down there are though... you might go by the So's office, have them "ok" whate ver you plan to do and that shold be enough to keep anyone of the locals from getting on ya..

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yes. I will be putting the fenders back on once everything is painted. If I need to go any large distance I'll just remove the outer duals which is not as much work as trying to hang temporary mudflaps.
