New Powerstroke MPG's ?
A friend of mine bought a brand new Ford PS automatic 4x4 with 3:55 gears. He is getting 9 miles to the gallon. I told him he should get better milage after the rings seat but he doesn't think so. I admit , I would have thought it would be getting better then 9 mpg's. Anyone ever heard of these things getting mileage this bad?

Yes, A lot of them have poor mileage issues. From what I heard they are working on some new software that will help out, it may even be out by now. Our 1 tool guy has one and has had it in at least 5 times and less than 6k on the clock. There has even been talk of guys returning them to the dealers and Ford is helping them into gas engines. I dont know if that is true but I know if I was only getting 9 and worse towing, I would get rid of the thing.

We just had a tech session with the head of PS development down at our local Ford dealer (hey we gotta service them all...even if I don't care for the Ferds..) and the mileage issue is killing them. They have such a convoluted EGR system and Catalyst system (the vents on the side are functional to help cool the pre catalyst that is hanging on the back of the engine!)
Anyway, they make great power, but they do it in an amazingly inefficient way because of the emissions equipment.
Look at what our new 6.7's are doing compared to the 5.9. Same reasons.

Yeh, he says he can't even tell he has a trailer behind him when towing. Also. he mentioned several times while I was ther checking it out, that he was going to get a gasser. I reminded him that I recommended him getting a Dodge Cummins several times and now he agrees. He is brand loyal though. He still doesnt believe me when I tell him My 95 with 3:50 gears got 21 mPG's unloaded. I'll let him know about the software. He talked about getting a chip for better mileage but wasnt sure if Ford has a way to tell if one is installed. Is there a tattle tell on these things? He thinks if you take it out before you take in to the dealer they can't tell one was in it. I sure wouldn't want him to mess up his warranty. He is 72 years old so he isn't all that familiar with todays technologies. I told him I would see what I could find out.

dont chip it. The SCT is supposed to be invisible, but I wouldnt bet my warranty on it.
You can tell him I get 21-22 unloaded with my truck in its current state also (long freeway trips. MOre like 17 mixed)

When I asked the RV Transport company that I'm going to be hauling for, what the BEST truck to get for this purpose, she said a Dodge Cummins.
She said that the Fords are costing the O/O's $200 - $300/trip more in fuel, & the GM's were expensive to fix (she mentioned injectors as an example).
So, I got myself an 03' Dodge 3500 Dually 2wd... hope it's ready to picked up this week.

I would not chip it either. Dealers are catching on and find the little signs showing a chip/programmer. With the price of the DPF's and EGR's I would want 100% of my warranty to cover that stuff that will probably fail.

seems the low mileage is the facts of life nowdays, with Ford in last place. Used the Boss's 08 PS 4x4 yesterday to pick up a Polaris Ranger on a 10ft trailer. Filled up when i left (unloaded), was on Empty when I got back. 196mile round trip. Never got over 65 mph and it was downshifting out of overdrive on small hill. Been to the dealer several times, they say all is well.
I like the truck, but the single digit mileage is enough to kill a man, not to mention the price, and i dont feel the power is impressive at all.

I have an 08 F350 dually for my service truck. It weighs in at about 20,000 with all my tools and crane and welder and stuff. I was getting 7.1 mpg and its getting a new engine now. I was coming out of a pit at work and at the top got a CEL and the engine locked up. It blew a head gasket and number 5 piston was in 4 pieces, number 5 rod in 6 pieces, and the crank was broken. NICE!

We have a new 6.4 Powerstroke, single cab long box at work and I worked it out to be getting around 9.4MPG right now. Will hopefully see better once the engine is broke in, but still..9MPG, that is horrible...

I sadly suspect to see Cummins and Duramax following suit with the eventual heep of even more emissions equipment coming. Obviously the tree huggers don't understand they are literally now choking the motors.
If they weren't animal rights people as well, I'm sure the tree huggers would want to put a catalytic converter and EGR system on cows too!

Gosh! I've pulled 30,000 pounds and got 11.2 MPH for 800 miles. I have heard this before on the PS's. The real problem is emission rules. To burn the particles you have to generate heat. Remember the first air pump equiped cars. They were the same way for years.

A guy I know has an 08 350 cc/dually and he told me he was getting max 9 mpg, then he did the DPF delete and tuning from Spartan and is getting 16 regularly. Thanks emissions laws, we're going to use up our already limited supply of fuel a heck of a lot faster now. I sure hope they develop something better in the coming years.
