Mercedes- older- appropriate cost?

I am looking for an older 1985ish Mercedes wagon. I don't care about the body- but DO care about it being reliable.
I may have found one in San Antonio, where I usually winter, but I am not there this year.
The car is a 1982 wagon- I forgot to ask the model. The body is pretty rough, but the engine is supposed to be good- the owner has been driving it.
What would be an appropriate price- it is not a collector's car- it is pretty bad outside.
I tried to look at Blue Book and NADA, but they list classic cars in better condition.
Thanks.

I paid $2200 for the one in my sig. Solid body, decent interior, everything important works. It needed a radiator and an alternator at time of purchase.

With body rot I'd pay no more than $1500.

FWIW, I paid 600 bucks for my 1984 300DT, runs great, good body with just a bit of rot and clean interior. The only downside is it needed a battery and a rear brake line.

Been trying to offload it for 1200 bucks and had no bites yet........

I picked up an 87 MB 300TD in good running condition and a spotless body and interior for $650 on Craigslist. It has 246,000 miles, and that scared everybody off, to my benefit.

IFRC the 80's era MB's had pretty good anti corrosion coatings from manufacture. The wagons are ID'd as 300TD, US delivery. Not all were turbodiesel. They are stout comfortable cars. You should be able to find a decent one for less than 3 grand. Maintenence is key.

All diesel Mercedes wagons imported to the U.S. were turbocharged.
