iPod Question
Since my "new" company vehicle does not have a CD player, I have been considering buying an iPod to use in the car (and possibly while at work too). The problem is I don't know what size I need and I don't really want to buy more than I need.
One of the things I plan to load onto the iPod is my Bible on CD. The complete set consists of 64 CD's, all about an hour in length. Does anyone have any idea how many gigs that would be once converted to MP3 to be played on the iPod? I would put music CD's on it as well, but my primary concern is getting one big enough to bet my Bible on it so I can listen to it as I commute.
My concern is that a 4 Gig or 8 Gig would be too small, which means stepping up to the 30 Gig which is pretty pricey.
Thanks.

Hoss,
I have a Pearl Jam concert recorded into mp3 format. It is 24 songs and the total is 54.4 MB. The concert is a little over 2 hrs. long so ball park figuring, 64CD's X 55MB's each = 3520 MB of information. There are 1024MB's in a Gig so a 8 Gig Ipod would probably suit your purpose along with being able to put extra music on it. Lets put it this way. I have a 20Gig Ipod and still haven't filled it up yet and I have a vast music collection.
Hope this helps.

Hoss- Do you need the whole bible at once at your fingertips? if not you can try it with one of the cheapo mp3 players that will only have space for say 3-4 hours. (If you don't need stereo and there's no music some more hours will fit)
You would need to take your time and select what you want to hear then... maybe not bad..

I'd like something that I can put the entire Bible CD collection on, plus whatever music I decide to put on it (I'm guessing maybe 20-30 CD's??).
At Best Buy I noticed the 8 Gig iPod was the same price as the 30 Gig iPod (not sure why but it was). If I have to buy the 8 Gig one I might as well get the 30, so I guess the real question is could I get away with the 4 Gig (which was $200).
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

the 8 gig and the 30 gig cost the same because the 8 gig uses flash memory, the 30 and 80 gig use a harddrive.
The 8 gig will consume less power (smaller battery).
The 30 and 80 gig have moving parts and thus can have more failures. Personally, I would go for the harddrive version. after you get some podcasts on it, and your cds and bible, and maybe a video or two, you will eat up alot of space quickly.
Think of the Ipod more as your personal entertainment solution rather than an mp3 player.

Right now I'm just thinking of it as a way to have my choice of either Bible or music while driving or sitting at my desk. Podcasts and video don't really interest me.
I just ripped the first of the 64 CD set and it is 56 MB. If I go conservative and assume every CD is 60 MB, then that means the entire set is about 3,840 MB. If one GB is 1024 MB then a 4 Gig iPod would leave 256 MB for music or other stuff. Given that, I should probably get at least the 8 Gig, which means I might as well go ahead and get the 30 Gig since they're the same price. Then I'll have plenty of room to do whatever I want. I just wish they weren't so expensive.
Different question...can you use Windows Media Player to upload albums to the iPod or does it HAVE to be done through iTunes?

Except for the upload times. Seems like that would take forever. Given that little bit of info I'm going to reconsider. I don't really want to spend hours at the computer uploading CD's. How long does it take to upload 56 MB?? Even with the fastest internet connection that has to take forever.

iTunes is a program that is on your computer. You don't load anything up on the internet. All iTunes does is find your MP3 files and points to them on your computer. Then when you load them to your iPod it is lightning fast.

Ahhh...in that case I'll reconsider my reconsideration.
I thought iTunes was strictly a website...and that you had to upload your music to it and then download that same music to your iPod. Thanks for the clarification.

I bought the 80gb. Video Ipod. I feel you can never have too much only not enough.
Are you going to listen to it through the headphones or are you going to transmit it through the receiver?
If you have the video Ipod you can have all of your entertainment with you if you stop at a hotel you can plug it into the TV and watch all of the movies you brought from home instead of having to pay for them.

There are third party programs out there but I think iTunes works fine after you figure out how to use it.
Ipod is not just for music; you can also have your movies, pictures, contacts, and calendar and use it to transfer data.
