It's your time, just be honest and tell him you need the day off.
He shouldn't be upset unless you made other prior commitments to be at your current work place for some meeting, delivery or special project.
As a manager, it would upset me if you took the day off knowing that the 10 new servers we purhased were coming that day, but on a normal day.....it's your business.
