Inspection laws in Mass
Well this raises a question for me. I know my truck puts out a good bit of smoke stock. No it's not billowing out of the tail pipe but I do have a question for you older (but so much wiser people out there). What exactly is a Cat on a diesel used for? I mean I get smoke with a Cat, and I'm sure I get it without a Cat. Does the cat actually reduce smoke by burning some of the unburnt fuel in the exhaust?? Also how come they stoped using cats on the 2nd gens? They had them on the 1sts and these? I know what they do on a Gas vehicle but am unsure of what they do on our Diesels (other than smell like propaine, but without the power of actual propain) I'm in RI so I know emissions are going to be tight here as well.
The CAT does nothing for the smoke levels, it decreases the other "bad" gasses.
Well, after a couple years, it will be so clogged that it might reduce the smoke a bit.
The 2nd gen 24 valve engines burned cleaner than the old 12 valve engines, so Dodge didn't need the CAT on them to satisfy the EPA.
The 2004.5 on up 3rd gens have to comply with the newest EPA regulations, so the CAT came back.

When I bought my 05, knowing I wouldn't be sniffed I went to a shop we use at work who does inspections, but not diesels. Since it's every other year for sniffing, I was told I wouldn't be sniffed until 09. I guess only 3+ year old trucks need it, not that this will help Dually600.
I don't know who told you that its every other year for sniffing but my info is that there is currently NO emissions test for diesels. Safety only.
At some point in the future the state plans on testing diesels for emissions buy not now.
My 98 was never sniffed and the 04 isn't due for its sticker until next month.
Since I don't have a gasser, I didn't realize that it is every other year for them.
Best,
Steve
