Question Seat belt state laws

In Indiana, seat belts are not required by law in pickup trucks. What is the law in other states?

Do you mean required by law to wear them, or have them in the vehicle?

To my knowledge, in Minnesota, you are required to wear seatbelts in any vehicle that was originally equipped with them. They just changed the law so that law enforcement can pull you over for seat belts ONLY. Before, they could only tack it on to another ticket.

All front passengers + anyone under 18(Regardless of postition) must wear them.

In AZ it's a secondary law or they must pull you over for another violation first. You cannot get pulled over for no seatbelt.

I believe it's still this way in MA, although I've heard they've been trying to get rid of the secondary aspect. Don't think they have yet.

Both the states of Virginia and West Virginia require seat belts for all passengers. The law allows them to pull you over just for seat belt infractions.

Saw a commercial on TV that said Seat Belts were required "coast to coast"

I would assume that means every state... either way, MI law requires seat belts in ANY vehicle for everyone....

Texas requires that every one wears them. In my opinion, it should be an option. If I want to go flying out the windshield head first then I should be able to.

I thought seat belts were federally mandated to be in all vehicles. Wear and enforcement, of course, would be by state and I thought all 50 states required their use.

SC - must wear belt. cannot be pulled just for seatbelt though. This may change soon to follow NC and the other states.

Blue - they are protecting tax dollars and generating cash from the hardheads that won't wear them...myself included.

Big Blue I agree. The low in VA. at first was not to be Abel to pule you over for the seatbelt infraction. The new Low states thy can now. I Don't agree. I was EMT volunteer fire & rescue squad and I have Sean very many low speed crashes were the person was having neck/back pain do to the seat belt. I have also seen toe people trapped under water do to seat belts. I also know most crashes happen with in 25 miles readies of ones home.

Where does it stop? We need common sense to keep us safe not police!! Just what I want is the police eating dohnuts watching for us to forget our seatbelt, just so we can pay their wages instead of trying to solve crimes!! Not all the police officers fault, mostly that of the politicians..

just my .002
sorry rant off

I was driving down a state road several weeks back and passed through a seat belt checkpoint that was set up by the state police. I, of course, was wearing mine so I was waved on through. On my way back, traffic was thin at the check point so I pulled over and asked the officer if it was a law to wear your seat belts in a pickup truck. He said that the law states that if the vehicle is a "passenger vehicle", seat bealts are required to be worn. Otherwise, they are not. I was informed that a pick up truck is not a "passenger vehicle" and I wasn't required to wear them. Not that any of this matters, because I always wear mine. The description of what a "passenger vehicle" is, I assume, could be debated 'till the cows come home.
