How to fix a computer that won't boot to Windows

had this problem while back, kinda fumbled my way thru it - thought to post it for you guys who may have same problem.

I have been using hibernation instead of shutdown/restart - twice as fast, easy cheesy.

anyways, DOS would boot, go into Windows, and then go back, reboot again

to fix: go into BIOS, set to boot from CD/DVD.
put in Windows CD.

boot off CD, select option "windows recovery console"
and that takes you to a DOS like screen,

type in HELP and it lists the files available.

type Fixboot (fix boot record)
type FIXMBR (fix master boot record)

then, restart.

worked like a champ for me. prevented MUCH agony.

don't forget to boot into safe mode (click F8 repeatedly during boot cycle)
and then run anti virus & SPYBOT to detect anything that may have cause the problem.

my system found ~30 things wrong in SAFE MODE that it could not find while windows was running.

I've taken two out back, removed the covers, cleaned them thoroughly, reinstalled the cover, then poured about a pint of 93 octane in the tower and OOPS, better not say it.

93 octane? Dude, it'd be cheaper to just buy a new Voodoo and be done with it...

Fixing the boot directory is a good trick. Most of the computers I used to build and fix on fixed their boot directories automatically at start up. (Or, at least they pretended to.)

Hey, I parked the rear axle of the school bus the wife drove on top of two VCR's one day. They never did work right again. Can't figure that one out.

my dad had a gateway - he got tired of talking to furrin'er's one day.

took it out back, in a safe ditch, with a secure back wall,

and unloaded his SIG into it, both clips....

problem is, he had the BIG monitor...and uh, he shot the monitor, keybd, mouse, ALL of it....and did not pay attention, and ordered a DELL with the little monitor - now he can't see it!

Can I just hit F8 during normal boot up, run spybot and Virus Scan, and get the same results???? My computer is slow as He## during boot up's and my spybot and Virus Scan Shown nothing. I have already done a disk defrag and clean up. Removed alot of unwanted pics and video files but the thing is still way slower than it used to be??????!!!!! Thanks

yep, that is it. F8, safe mode, do the scans,

and run MCafee Desktop Firewall to actually prevent programs from runnning in windows

windows genuine advantage notification is a good one to block.
i don't need them to use up my resources to tell me they won't authenicate the copy of Windows i paid full price for, because i had to reload it too many times....

there are settings in BIOS for "quick boot" and skip memory tests.... YMMV

Did you know you can edit the registry on win2k so it doesn't require a key code

If fixboot or fixmbr resolves an issue that you didnt blatantly create, its because the harddrive is failing. Copy it to a new one or in some random amount of time you'll either have the problem again or complete failure.

Also applies to ntldr missing, system32\config missing or corrupt, hal.dll missing or corrupt, etc.
