If I remember correctly, both Audi and Mercedes tried the 5 cylinder. They had vibration problems - - never could get them to balance out. They had a lot of torque for the cubes, though. Wonder why? 8) 8)
Re:GMC's new Inline 5 cyl.
The I5 that GM will soon be using in the new small pickup that replaces the S10/Sonoma is based off of the I6 used in the Trailblazer and Envoy. The engine sounds funny but has decent power. In a vehicle it feals more powerful than the 4.3 V-6.
Re:GMC's new Inline 5 cyl.
the 4.3v6 has to be the best V6 that I know of. With plenty of power and a moderate amount of torque, many of your extreame rock crawlers run these motors. I had a s10 with this motor and loved it
Re:GMC's new Inline 5 cyl.
I do not have any information on the inline 5. But the 4.3l V6 is one of the worst engines GM has ever built. Thats why they have discontinued it.

THe 4.2L Inline 6 is a beast. They have corrected all the concerns with the cylinder sleeves and they are a pretty nice engine now. Yet to see any real problems with them.

As far as the inline 5. Volvo still uses it. But I do agree that they are going to have balance problems due to the odd # of cylinders. But more power to them. They should be at the dealers in Fall...
I am going to give it a shot.

They discontinued the 4.3 because they couldnt meet the more stringent emmisions regualtions with the almost 50 year old technology that the 4.3 is based on. I can think of a lot worse motors that GM has built...
- Vega 2.3 4Cyl.
- Olds 350 Diesel
- Olds 4.3L Diesel

The 4.3L V6 is one of the best engines GM has ever built. Right up there with the 350 (since it's based off of the 350).
I had one in my '98 Chevy C1500. Decent power (even more after I got through with it!) and fuel economy. Only limitation was in towing.

MikeyB

The utterly forgettable Olds 260 V-8 diesel, same weight as the 350 with even less power. Offered in the Gutless in the late '70's, available with a 5 speed so as not to waste any of the 90 horsepower. The GM execs responsible for the whole Oldsmo-diesel debacle ought to have been taken out and shot. What a concept - V-6 power and fuel economy from a V-8, plus you get to wait for glow plugs in 95 degree weather. It's no wonder most Americans wouldn't buy a diesel vehicle at gunpoint with that abortion in the collective memory.

Did anyone mention the Chebby 2.8 V6? That was one where you had to change the oil religiously or the drains from the head (pushrod guides) would clog up and the engine went up in smoke after all the oil got pumped into the heads
. Changed a few of those engines in my day. Oh yeah, the Cadilac 4.1L V-8, Same as the Chebby 2.8, but with 2 more cylinders. Didn't change out any of those, just junked them.
The Chevette had the 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines. They were pretty tough, but no power. Unfortunately, I know about both from experience. :'(
