is Facebook full of viruses?
is Facebook full of viruses?
wife is on it all the time.
it's a pretty good tool to share pics and idly comment on each others activities.
she got a virus few weeks ago that forced a total re-format of the hard drive.
took about a week to get it all back working & all the proprietary drivers reloading.
she was uploading some pics to facebook tonight, and got a huge virus/spoof/scam thing saying she had 70 viruses in one folder, 100 in another, 500 in "my documents"
about 5 files downloaded and tried to execute.
was kinda crazy.
we are running full scans, nothing found yet.
but we still have not recovered some of the drivers from the last re-format, and do NOT want to do that again.

I don't understand the whole point of Facebook. I got on it when someone from my highschool was organizing the reunion, and for that is was great. But people get on there and explain their minute by minute activities of the day. They post pictures that no one but them are really interested in. They suggest people to me that I should accept as my friend when I don't even know who they are.
Then there are the games... Farmville, Mafia and Zooville? I'm sorry, but if you have enough time to spend on that kinda thing, go get a part time job where you can actually do something constructive.

Facebook can get you wonderful new job opportunities.....

How many times have you updated your Facebook status to say "…is bored at work"? Probably at least once, though statistically that number averages at 3.4 times a week.* (*Not a real statistic.)
But can you imagine getting fired for it? Because that's what happened to Briton teen, Kimberly Swann. She was summarily sacked after her boss learned -- via her updated status -- that she was "bored at work." In this hilarious CNN segment, a journalist does a search for the terms "bored" and "work" on Facebook and Twitter, and finds that Swann certainly isn't alone. (Further research would no doubt dig up folks saying far worse things about their place of employment).
Her boss, meanwhile, says Swann's admission of boredom revealed that "she just wasn't happy here" and thus "it wasn't going to work out." We're no experts, but why was the boss perusing Facebook on company time? Was he, perhaps, a little bored?

...and they should be fired. I know if it were my company and I'm paying people good money to be doing a job, they had better be doing it or go away. I used to have a facebook account but got rid of it recently. I just get sick of hearing so much about people i haven't seen in 20 years. It gets old.
Yea I've gotton a couple of e-mails from people saying that they have added me to their friend list on facebook. I just reply, sorry not interested. As far as viruses, you can get them from any site. Thats why it's always good to have a good firewall & update your virus scanner often. Oh & don't forget to back up your files, address book & favorites.

Facebook by itself is not full of viruses but once you start in with the games you open up to a whole new threat level.
As for the OP question. There are some pop up links that pretend to run a virus scan and report major infestations. Then says to clean them you have to down load their scan and removal tools. Just shut down explorer and ignore those bogus scans and use your own anti virus to check your computer.

Long skittish about forums such as Facebook and Twitter, the U.S. Department of Defense says that it is now OK with social networking services and other interactive Web 2.0 applications. A memorandum released Friday makes it official policy that the agency's nonclassified network will be configured to provide access to Internet-based capabilities across all Defense components, including the various combat branches

Great, something else for me to deal with out here in the sandbox. I wonder how many calls we'll get for "I can't open my Facebook" now.
The Internet generally speaking, is a cesspool laden with micreants whose sole purpose in life is to a) surf ****, b) create malware for the fun of it, or c) create malware for the purpose of bilking money and/or valuable information from the unsuspecting or ill-prepared. Those micreants may or may not be organized at any level up to and including state sponsorship.
Facebook just provides an easy target vector. You'd have been borked by a hacked DTR page by now if somebody thought it was worth the effort.
