Engine ID needed, pleese

I was browsing in a junk yard that had a bunch of lawn mowers, antique tractors, a few vehicles while looking for a transmission for my Dodge. Well I happened on this 4 cyl diesel and I thought "WOW! A 4bt!" but as I looked, the pump was on the wrong side and it was small. The pump looked VERY similar to a VE but I couldn't find a tag. The engine tag said something about German xxxxxxx as I couldn't read German (Think it was something close to engineering?). It also had a symbol on it similar to the Mercede's Benz but I couldn't read the 1st half of the name as it was worn. Said something about KW/H @ RPM's. Definitaly foreign. Industrial type engine and about the size of a 1.9L gas.

Thanks if you guys can help.

BTW, it was yellow

sounds like it's quite possibly a VW diesel. Can you get a picture of it?

Wow! Lucky guess!ThermoKing used to use them, back in the mid 70's I remember parts for that engine were cheaper to get from Thermo King than from a Mercedes dealer.

That doesn't look anything like a VE pump to me ???

I suggested the VW engine because you mentioned the VE pump.
