Small diesel engine ideas needed!

Hi guys,
I recently picked up a 61 Jeep Mighty Mite and am thinking about transplanting a small diesel engine into it. I was looking at the D-4D 4 cyl. motor that Toyota is now making for european Rav-4's but they are expensive and hard to find. Ideas would be appreciated. Here is a link to pics of the project....http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/jkravi.../ph//my_photos

How about a toyota hilux diesel? They have been around for a while, and the toyota cabs/frames rot out long before the engines do.

How heavy is a 4bt? That Hilux might work well too. I will have to measure up both setups. An air cooled old Bettle motor bairly fits into this small compartment.

About 700 lbs, similar to a v-8.

Pretty sweet rig---what are your plans for it? I've got my eye on a 42 ****** and I'm looking at a 3 cylinder Yanmar out of, say, a John Deere compact tractor, or maybe a sailboat motor. Even a 20 horse 3cyl can be turned up pretty good and it'll likely be enough to get the ****** up to 50mph or so, which is as fast as I'd trust the brakes Flip the windscreen down, add a leather helmet and some goggles...some biodiesel and 45mpg...now that's a cool summer rig

a 4-bt would be much too heavy. It's also a heavy industrial engine.

Perhaps a small delivery-truck isuzu engine or as they mentioned, the Toyota Hilux engine, if you can find one. Remember that you will still need parts for it sometimes...

Good luck, have fun!

Or find one of the 60 HP Perkins diesel engines that could be ordered in Jeeps up to, I think, 1961. What a cool setup.

If that doesn't work out consider a Mercedes 240 or 300 diesel. The 300 five cylinder might be too long but the 240 could be perfect. They have about 60-70 HP and are pretty much unbreakable.

How about a little Land Rover 4 banger diesel? I have an old series III sitting in the yard but I would have a tough time selling it if I pulled the motor for this project. It always seems to run though.

I just bought a forklift with a good running (although kinda smoky) perkins 4 cylinder non-turbo diesel in it. I paid $1200 for the whole thing. This particular diesel, called the 4-236, was put in many different forklifts and was used in a bunch of marine applications as well. It was made in both turbo and non-turbo models, and parts are still plentiful. I have no idea what it weighs though, and light weight probably wasn't a consideration at the heavy end of a forklift. If it's not too heavy, that might be a good candidate-they look easy to work on.
