Emergency HELP HELP

A few weeks ago I found one of our dog dead out by the barn. He had been in a fight and got the short end of the stick. It turns out that one of my neighbors is letting his two-½ pit bulls run loose and they killed my dog.I'm not mad that’s just what dogs do ,just glad my grandkids were not running around with his dogs out.
Now without starting a big argument or fight with him I have a live trap and intend to do away with the pits.

Now I need some advice how do you remove a skunk from a live trap without getting sprayed?

The skunk did not kill my dog. Besides they are better at catching mice than a cat. So I would like to remove him from the trap without hurting him (or stirring him up) for that matter.
I have heard that if you slowly (I think the key word here is slowly) use a blanket and cover the trap then raise the door that he will not spray, Has anyone tried this?

As potent as they are I would be afraid to move him around much.

After I walked away from the computer, I had the same thoughts about covering him up with some burlap or something.

Do you have a video camera ............ ...............

Maybe a spouse or child that could stand at a safe distance and document this relocation .

Keep some tomato juice handy

Since you want him alive, Maybe you could prop open the door and let him out. Probably not, I'll bet stinky's ticked, Keep us posted. Lots of luck.

What was your original intent for the live trap? It is in the barn, right?

Never thought of rabies, we had a confused raccoon here last week. I don't trust them, last thing you need is a rabid animal fighting with your domesticated animals.

I am not an animal professional in any way, but I find it funny that some one other that me has found themselves in this situation. I to did this very thing not once but twice. After talking to an animal professional, I was informed that a skunk/pole cat wont spray unless HIGHLY provoked. In my case the trap wasnt enough to provoke him to spray. I said to heck with it and walked up to the door and opened it and they ran out each time. One even stoped, turned and looked at me as if to say "Thanks butt hole".

Maybe you could walk up and gently attach a 50' rope on the cage and gently drag it to the lovely dog owner’s house and then start throwing bricks at the cage and see what the skunk does then!!!

Im not trying to stir up a stink over this, but here is what I have found works best.
1. Cover the trapped skunk with a tarp or blanket. It wont spray.
2. Sink the trap, skunk, and tarp in a pond for a few minutes.
3. Remove the wet skunk and reset your clean trap.
