I thought when I left Alaska I wouldn't be dealing with these so much. Was pretty good thumper here just outside of St. Louis. I guess better to have lots of smaller ones than the one big one (I think it was an 8.0). Didn't know we were so close to the fault line out here...

Well, you guys have had 10 of them since they started on the 18th. Guess you had better get used to checking here. Remember that the largest earthquake in the 48 contiguous states was the New Madrid one in the 1800's. And your problem there, unlike us here in Cali, is that there are no adjacent fault lines to help absorb the shock when another fault lets go. The New Madrid quake was reported to have knocked down chimneys as far away as Atlanta, GA. And was felt in Charleston, SC. Remember, duck and cover.

Back in the day when I drove, I had people tell me they didn't like going to CA because of the quakes, funny thing they thought it was fine to St. Louis. Amazing how many people don't realize how big the the fault line is there. when we had a 7.8 here in 2000 or 2001 whatever the year was, I had just come in for lunch, kicked back and turned on the boob tube and was watching Charlton Hesston's Earthquake movie, all of a sudden my dog set up and things started shaking. It took me a bit to figure out it wasn't the movie, and not my surround sound. I went out side and watched the waves in the ground pass by, It lasted over a minute, course we called the neighbors to make sure everyone was ok, an about a half hour my mother in Idaho called and asked if I had felt it. I laughed and told her the epicenter was like 80 miles away and yes I had, it took almost 30 minutes to travel 2000 miles to her. The worst accident was some older woman fell as she was leaving her house and broke her arm. A friend an I went south to see the damage, it ripped open the highway and made a large crack into the valley. Two parts of the Alaska Range fault broke loose that day, but a section in the middle didn't slip, its just a matter of time before it does. I forget how many smaller ones hit here everyday, heck they don't even report the one's smaller than 2.5.....Saw they are predicting a large one for CA in the next few years.
