I wasn't sleeping. Been up and on the road since 0330. Got to where I was going, (can't say where, the company is petrified someone will steal their anti-lock braking secrets. That should give you a hint), and am now on break from the first round of teaching.
TUESDAY, JULY 31:
1790 - The first U.S. patent was issued to Samuel Hopkins for his process for making potash and pearl ashes. The substance was used in fertilizer.
1792 - The cornerstone of the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, PA, was laid. It was the first building to be used only as a U.S. government building.
1932 - Enzo Ferrari retired from racing. In 1950 he launched a series of cars under his name.
1945 - Pierre Laval of France surrendered to Americans in Austria.
1948 - U.S. President Truman helped dedicate New York International Airport (later John F. Kennedy International Airport) at Idlewild Field.
1964 - The American space probe Ranger 7 transmitted pictures of the moon's surface.
1971 - Men rode in a vehicle on the moon for the first time in a lunar rover vehicle (LRV).
1989 - A pro-Iranian group in Lebanon released a videotape reportedly showing the hanged body of American hostage William R. Higgins.
1991 - U.S. President George H.W. Bush and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.
1999 - The spacecraft Lunar Prospect crashed into the moon. It was a mission to detect frozen water on the moon's surface. The craft had been launched on January 6, 1998.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Why do they call it an asteroid when it's outside the hemisphere, but call it a hemorrhoid when it's in your behind?
Coffee is a tad on the unfamiliar side this morning.

1) On the road since 3:30 - - hmmmm, should have at least been awake when preparing this epistle - - - but no.
2) Asteroids vs hemorrhoids? You are really a mess
3) No appreciation for class imported coffee, shipped fresh to our front door from exotic places all over the world. I try to share a bit of sophistication with you this morning and you wrinkle your nose - - - sad. Oh well, I tried. ............
OK, go redeem yourself, get back in class and spout words of wisdom the rest of the day. .......

Morning folks, still on solo control. Wife is home but non-functional. Made her and the cat breakfast. Looks like I will be playing nurse for a few days.

Evening all. This could be an interesting evening. We have had hot humid weather and tornadoes within 50 miles for the last few days. There is a nasty cold front due through here in a few hours. It has built up major super cells up and down the foothills of the Rockies all afternoon. Tornado warnings are up again north of us. For now we don't have the warning but nasty stuff this way cometh....
Towed my bil's trailer into the mountains today. It is about 3,000 lbs loaded up. There are some really steep grades along the way. The engine did fine but the tranny got a little hotter than I liked (hit 110 C briefly). On the steep inclines I locked out O/D and dropped down to 2200 rpm / 70 km/h. Seems a little hot for a heavy duty truck. I will ask about it over in the towing or second gen section. Just commenting here.
I really hope Mother Nature takes pity on us tonight.
If I don't stop by in the morning it means the tornadoes got us. If that happens, I will land somewhere near Scotty Canuck. Scotty - I know you don't drink but if we land there I would really appreciate a frost beer.....
