Cylinder help??
Cylinder help??
Hello board,
Recently purchased a 158 loader for my 4020 JD. The installation has gone pretty well up until today. Had everything tied in and hooked up....hit the bucket tilt valve, and a geyser of hydraulic oil erupted from the right side bucket cylinder. (Near the bottom at the 90 deg pipe fitting). Hoping it was just a matter of taking the fitting out and replacing or retaping it...I took the fitting apart....only to find what appeared to be a rubber band type item protruding from between the outer cylinder wall, and where the fitting screws into the cylinder. (Hope that all makes sense to you).
I'm assuming this is part of the seal / packing within the cylinder, and that it is going to need to be replaced. Am I going to have to pull the cylinder and take it into my dealer, or can I throw it on the bench and get er done myself. Moderately mechanically inclined, but never tore into one of these before. Anyone have any insight ??

If you can install a F/E loader on your tractor, I am quite sure you can handle the reseal job on said cylinder. when you blow it apart, there will usually be some sort of threaded cap on the rod end of the cylinder. Then, either the threaded cap holds it together, or there will be a snap ring holding the end cap in. Remove snap ring, then remove the rod/cap/piston all at once.
Piston is usually held on to the rod with a large nut or bolt, normally torqued to between 350 and 500 lbs. ( this is a generalisation, as I do not normally work on JD ) remove said nut or bolt, and piston slides off the back end of the rod. There may, or may not be an o-ring inside the piston, against the rod, then there will be the seals on the outside of the piston. Be aware of lip orientation on these seals. It doesn't hurt to run a fine ball hone through the cylinder, to help clean up any minor scarring. if the scarring is major, replace the barrel, or the whole cylinder.
On the gland end, there will be seals inside the gland, against the rod, you may as well replace these as well, the new ones should come in the seal kit. use plenty of assembly lube, either hydraulic oil, or 105 assembly grease when putting it back together, put it back in the machine, and go to work.
