Computer gurus, help please
Have a few questions for your computer experts.
Recently my router died. When it died for some reason it corrupted some files and I could not even start my computer. Ended up by removing my WinPro 2000 program and reloading it. A real PIA, specially as I had to one by one reload all the programs. Bit by bit I have finally got my computer back to where it was before the problem.
- Can anyone tell me why it now takes 3 or 4 times as long to shut down? Startup takes about the same time as before the problem.
- My server is of course all in Spanish which is not a problem but howcum now when I try and load a program it tries to load it in Spanish. For instance, I am trying to make my new router make a single printer work between two computers. The printer is a HP and in the past when I installed the programming CD it used to come up in English. Now it comes up in Spanish. How do I change this? Just to complicate things, when I installed the router program from a CD it all came up in English. So why does the router program work in English but the HP printer program only comes up in Spanish? There is nothing on the HP CD to even indicate that it contains anything other than English.
- How can I prevent this same non start problem in the future if something goes kaput?
_ There are a few other things that now come up in Spanish that used to come up in English. Like Google for example, but that one was esy to change.

De alguna manera usted necesita sincronizar su lenguaje de programacion con el de sus CD's de la instalacion por ejemplo... si su computadora se fija para el Espanol y su CD del HP es en Ingles usted no puede instalar cualquier cosa.
and hey? if that dosen't help...at least i got to practise my inglush to spanish translation!

Make sure you visit microsoft and get the latest patches for that Winders.
I noticed mine was getting slower and slower to shut down,
got the latest and greatest updates and now it pretty much shuts down right when I tell it to.
Not to mention the viruses, trojans, and hackers a naked Win2K is vulnerable to.
Could be worse, just think if you had loaded WinXP on it

Ditto...There are several Service Packs for Windows 2000 that correct all sorts of problems. You can get them by running "Windows Update" and following the on screen instructions. To run Windows Update: While Internet Explorer is open, go up to the top of the window and click on "Tools." Select "Windows Update" from the Tools menu and it will take you to the page. When the page opens, select "Scan for updates" and follow the on screen instructions from there. You will probably have to go back and run Windows Update several times to get all the patches.
If that doesn't fix your problem, I may be able to help if you want to try this. It involves exporting your event viewer log (error log) and sending it to me via e-mail so I can review it and hopefully pinpoint your problem. The registered errors are not always decipherable, but it is worth a shot. Don't worry.....I'm a professional.
Make sure you run Windows Update a couple of times first and test it to see if it fixed your problem. I'm heading out of town tomorrow for a week, so you would have to do this fast so I'll have time to review these logs and get back to you before I go.
Open your Control Panel like goldenears instructed you to. When the Control Panel is open, double-click on the button called "Administrative Tools." When the Administrative Tools window opens, double-click on the button called "Event Viewer." The Event Viewer has three logs inside; Application Log, Security Log, and System Log. We are only concerned with the Application and System Log. Notice when the Event Viewer opened, it displayed the first log automatically and there are all these big red X's listed that say "Error" beside them? Those are bad. Most will not affect anything, but one of them is likely your culprit. You may be able to open these and decipher them enough to pinpoint your problem. If not, you can send them to me and I'll review them for you.
You will need to export one log at a time (not one entry) and attach it to an e-mail To do this, while the event viewer is open, you want to right-click on the log title called "Application Log" and a little menu will pop up. From this menu, select "Save Log File As" and save it to your hard drive in a place where you can find it. Name the file "Application" so I'll know which log I'm looking at. Do the same thing to the "System" log and name it "System" so I'll know that file is the system log. Now attach these two files to an e-mail and send them to me. PM me and I'll give you my home e-mail address to send them to.

I have the latest patches and my virus stuff is updated daily. So hopefully I am protected....
Another question:
I have the printer working on my primary computer. It is hooked up via a USB connection. I set up the secondary computer via a USB connection as well and it can print when connected directly to the printer but does not print when just hooked up to my router. Computer #2 is connected to the router with a cat 5 cable and it connects OK to the internet. Should not the router be able to take the info from computer #2 and feed it via the primary computer to the printer? I tried reconfiguring the printer to work with a serial connection thru the primary computer but it made no difference. When I try printing from computer #2 I receive an error message DOT4_001. Have no idea what this means.
Any suggestions as to how I can make the printer work on both computers? It used to work with my old router but it was connected differently.

Printing with your setup should just be a matter of making sure the printer is shared out on the computer it is attached to. If the printer is shared, you should be able to go to the other computer (the one with no printer), open "My Network Places" on your desktop and go to the other computer on the network. When you see the other computer, you should be able to click on it and it will show the shared printer under it. Then just double-click on the shared printer and your computer will automatically set itself up to print on it. Then it is just a matter of selecting that printer from the list of printers when printing or setting it as the default printer and it will automatically select it all the time. Sharing the printer so it will show up on the network is something you have to do first before this will work. Windows will not do that for you.
To share the printer, go to the computer the printer is physically connected to and click on the Start button, go up to Settings, then select printers. When the printers box opens, right-click on the printer you want to share and a little menu will pop up. Select "Sharing" on that menu. A window will pop up and give you the option to "Share As." Check the box next to "Share As" and give it a name. Select OK, then reboot the computer and the printer will show up on your network, then follow the instructions above.
