Computer Question for the Gurus

Just ordered DSL. Says I have to have an "NIC" card. My computer DOES have an ethernet port, but when I run the little Verizon system check it says I have no Ethernet NIC Card. I thought they were the same thing. Am I missing something??

Re:Computer Question for the Gurus

If you have never gone in and setup the drivers the computer may not know it is there. Go to add hardware (Start-settings-Add Hardware) and tell it to go look for new hardware - it may find it.

Or you may have to plug the DSL modem into the port to get the computer to recognize there is something there and to automagically recognize the NIC card.

Ain't Windows wonderful???? All bow to Bill Gates.........

Re:Computer Question for the Gurus

Hoss,

The device may be disabled. Go into the device manager and check. It may need the drivers also.

When you go into the device manager you should see a list of teh devices. Look for one call "network adapters". Click on the plus sign and see what is in there. If it lists an adapter, right click on it and go to properties. It should tell you if the device is working properly or has been disabled.

Good luck....

Re:Computer Question for the Gurus

I'll try all of the above tonight and see what happens. This is a fairly new computer and it came with the ethernet port in the back so I assumed that everything was there and working properly. :-

Re:Computer Question for the Gurus

Well, if you don't see the network card in the windows hardware gizmo, you should go into th BIOS- by pressing the key it say to press to get into setup just after you turned on the power. See under "integrated peripherals" if there is a network adapter or the like and whether it is enabled or not.
Enable if needed, then the windows hardware gizmo can find it.
If you can't get it to work, the NICs range from around 10 US$ per piece here- so just plug one in and you are ready to go ;D if notheing else works.

Re:Computer Question for the Gurus

Messed around with the computer last night and I THINK I have what I need. It had two things....one was a Net Adapter and one was a "Blah blah blah Fast Ethernet Adapter". Don't know what's what, but I'm just hoping that when I install the DSL modem and software the computer will know what to do from there. :-
