Calling all techies. I'm getting ready to install a Netgear WGR614 wireless router (already purchased so no point it telling me to buy something else instead). What I want to know is what all do you recommend that I do to secure my wireless network (aside from Cat5 )? Neighbors will be the only ones that might try to get on as we get very little outside traffic thru here and anyone parking to steal a signal would be pretty obvious. I just want my laptop and home computer to both be able to share cable Internet. Eventually I may want to be able to share files but Internet will do for now.

I have an old netgear so I don't have the new fancy encryption methods.

I use regular old 128 bit WEP and MAC address limiting. Basically says only this Mac (hardware) address can use it. The mac address can be spoofed but it is 1 more thing for them to have to figure out.

Whatever the new stuff is (WPA is whatever?) just use that and you should be great.

Even just 128 bit WEP will weed out 90% of the ID10T's because there are so many "open" wireless access points around.

 

OK. I have to post a real ID 10 T question. On the back of the router is the IP 192.168.0.1. It also says that the default user name is admin and the default password is password. Real complicated, right? I have it hooked up and am accessing the Internet via the wireless right now so I know that it's working. (Pretty much plug and play.) I put 192.168.0.1 in my IE browser address line and it brings up the login box BUT the defaults won't let me in? Ideas?

make sure caps is not on?

admin (lowercase) and (password) lowercase not work?

If not then hmm! i just checked 3 sites for the default password to confirm that is the right login/pass.

 

Maybe try access the login via the NIC. Any RJ45 connectors on the box?

I tried both wired and wireless and double checked the caps lock. I even pushed the reset to defaults button on the back.

No wonder so many wireless setups are unsecured if just logging in is this hard. Guess mine will be unsecured for a while too.

 

Hold down the reset button for 5 or 10 seconds. Typically just pressing it once reboots the router, not resets defaults.

Try the whole word "administrator", that's what the default on my Linksys was, along with password for the password.

It has since been changed, just in case one of you is in my front yard.

As to the security, I just used the basic MAC limiting and 128 bit WEP as well.

There are at least 10 wireless networks around me, 5 of them are WEP protected, so those that want to borrow bandwidth have 5 others to use before they have to hack into mine.

Brandon gets the gold star on getting me logged in. Held the button for 10-15 seconds and then rebooted the modem (again) and then rebooted the router (at least the 5th time tonight) and then tried logging in and it let me in with admin and password. Now for the security setup.
