The car/truck/bike that got away

I think this morning about some of the vehicles in my past that "got away." You know, that one you were bidding on at a auction and were out bid, or someone bought it from a private seller before you could get financing, or maybe that old *insert vehicle here* that your Dad/Uncle/Friend had, and got rid of it before you could ever get your hands on it.

I have a couple. First was a 1968 Dodge Charger with a blown head gasket: $3000. It ran great (save for the now overheated engine), had a 4spd, and the body was fantastic. The guy was selling it just so he could get rid of it because he had 4 other Chargers he wanted to take care of. Original interior too. I couldn't come up with the cash in time, and I think he said a retired guy bought it. Would have been a sweet second car....

1994 Eagle Talon Tsi (2.0 Turbo AWD). I had a non turbo, non-awd Talon and a buddy offered to trade me plus $1000 on my part for his. He was basically tired of having people want to race him (it was stock though, still fast) and tired of paying for premium gas. I had the money, but he ended up wrecking it due to a drunk driver and the car was a total loss.

1975 Dodge D100. This one has a happy ending actually. It was my Grandad's, that I'd ridden in with him and later my mom when I was a kid. I loved the truck. It is a Slant 6, Auto, 2wd. Nothing real special other than memories. My Aunt got it for my cousin after my Grandad died, and he blew the engine in it. When I turned 15 I asked if I could buy it from them (in its state, as is), or if they could just give it to me. They said yes, and the weekend before I was to come down to their place to pick it up they decided I couldn't have it. Fast forward 10 years. My Aunt calls me, and says she decided after it sitting for 10 years, my Cousin probably won't want to do anything with it (he'd said that 10 years ago), and I could have it. I now have it at my Father in law's, with the engine out, looking for a 318 to put in it!

1999 Dodge 2500 (Cummins) 4x4 5spd. I found this baby with 165k on it, for $11k earlier this year. It was White exterior with the dark interior. I was able to drive it for a day and a half (very nice small car lot guy let me do this). I am still in love with it. Unfornuately, my financing didn't come through and I had to let her go. *sigh* Darn you Wells Fargo.

1997 Dodge 2500 (Cummins) 4x4 5spd. This one is...one in a million. 98k on it, Laramie, every option. White with Tan Leather interior. I found this right after my 99 (just happened to be white too). A retired guy who was selling only because his back wouldn't allow him to drive cross country with his RV any longer (they were buying a actually full on RV). Thats all the truck was used for, pulling a RV all 98k miles. I drove a hour and a half to see this truck, only to find out that the guy had sold it the day before. He still had it, but the other guy hadn't come to pick up. I was slightly ******.

What is your car/truck/bike etc. that got away? (there can be multiples!)

i guess it kinda got away, it was my first car. a 1979 buick riveria, i blew the motor in it when i was in high school. it had a 350 4bbl, front wheel drive, vinyl top, and the inside was HUGE!! well i went to basic training right after i graduated, when i came home it was gone. mom had it and two other cars hauled off to the junk yard. needless to say i went straight to the junk yard and he had already gotten rid of it. i havent been able to find one like it since. i still give her a hard time about it but it is all in good fun.

I had a 67 Dodge dart GT Convertible Auto car that came from the factory with a 273 V8. I was in the process of fixing it up to be a daily driver when my best friend told me he had a friend with an original 68 Dart 383 Big Block 4 speed car that I could get for $400.00. It needed some work but the engine was newly rebuilt and it ran strong. This was back in about 1985. I was really into convertibles at the time and didn't even give it a second thought and I kept on driving my Convertible. Well, today the convertible is worth maybe $5-$10,000 while the BB Dart would be worth many times that....

I also had a 70 Challenger R/T 440 that I sold a few years later for $6000 and it was in great shape. We all know what a nice E-Body sells for today!!!!!

Did I mention ?

1. 1970 Buick Stage 1 GS455 that I won my class at the Buick GS nationals with in 1990. Wish I had it back now. It was a 12.60 car on drag radials with all stock engine internals except for a Kenne-Bell 118 cam, aluminum B4B intake and Kenne-Bell headers and it had cold a/c also. Hey it's a Buick. Going Fast With Class is the motto.

2. 1987 Buick T-Type mid 11 second car with cold a/c and power everything. sold it to pay off my truck after my first divorce so I could keep the truck.

I've had several big block Buick Skylark conversions and a 66 Gran Sport with the 401 engine with factory air and the tach in the floor console. But none of them meant as much as the 1st two.

Back in 1998 I came across a 1993 Cobra Mustang with only 13,000 miles. It was in a used car hole-in-the-wall in NorthWest Alabama. They had no idea what they has as they were only asking $11,500... I was broke at the time as we had just bought a new home.

LOL, You mean the ones that you had and should have kept?

I'm with Mcoleman, 1970 Stage1 GS, Bought it for 600 bucks, replaced the short block, drove it for a couple of years, got mad at it, sold it for 1200 bucks.

That's the only one I really mourn, though my 66 tri-power GTO is close.

As for ones I should have held up a bank to buy?

Only really 2, 1970 legit LS6 Chevelle with 46K miles, Cortez silver, and all correct, guys wanted 4600 bucks, I told him he was nuts. Fast forward a few years, same guy with a 1973 Brewster Green SD455/4 speed TA and 30ish thousand legit miles.......he wanted 4500 for that one.

The 81 Ford in my pics. Traded it away for stuff I thought I needed.

I think me wanting it back is as much related to remembering how simple my life was at the time I had it.

Great, simple truck none the less.

1964 Chevelle SS hardtop. Had the car in high school 25+ years ago. 327 not a dent in the car, bucket seats with full length chrome console and factory floor shifter. Transmission cratered, yanked motor and put in '78 chevy truck thinking that was a better deal. Tried to build a dirt track car out of a piece of history, total failure, car is still sitting in the deep east Texas woods somewhere. Makes me sick to think about it! Oh well "life lesson".

I have a couple that got away:

1970 Chevelle, had new qtr panels, interior was nice, had a fresh 350 bolted in but not hooked up, guy wanted $1500 for it, first person to see it bought.

2004 Mercury Marauder, 75,000 miles, ran great, looked great, $13,000 at dealership, couldnt get financing.

One that I shouldnt have let go:

1979 Chevy Monza Spyder, was given to me by my uncle, originally a v6, had a 350 v8 that my uncle pulled, 4 sp. saginaw, 4 bolt wheels, I had every ting to convert it to 5 bolt, plus the stock 305 out of my elcamino, sold everything short of the engine for $300.

I know where there is another one, I am going to call and see if they will sell it.

This was a truck I got for a steal, garage kept and handwashed every weekend, sold it last year and have regretted it ever since. It would fly down the road.

A 74 F-100 (my avatar), 460BB, C-6, 9" rear, 60k original miles and mint oringinal paint and interior
