Congratulations...I've been there many times before I retired. It isn't a bad place and their is a lot to hold your interest when you have time away from the books.

Lots of trucks in that part of the country, so most likely there are some diesels.

Will you be at FLETC for 15 or 21 weeks? I see they have added six weeks for spanish if your are assigned to the Mexican border, and I see Laredo in your information. Love that place. It was wild and wooly. I was stationed there in 1974.

Are you training to become an Inspector, Import Specialst, Analyst or something else?

Saint Simon's Island is right there. We go there every year. A nice place to go to the beach. There are a lot of barrier islands up and down the coast that have nice beaches (Jekyll Island is just south of Saint Simon's Island). Charleston SC is a couple hours away, another nice place to visit.

Good luck,
~Rob

Rick,

I mentioned you had Laredo in your information. Are you orginally from Laredo, or did you report on duty there?

After thinking more about your question soem more, while I was at FLETC, we mainly inhabited a place called "Pam's". It was the place on Friday nights. Their guests were totally stressed out by week's end, so you can imagine. If it is gone, other places have taken over I am sure. It is kind of like a military base. Everything is outside the gate for you.

Like I said, don't know about the truck situation for sure, but other things will fill in while you are there.

They, of course, have computers...hop online and visit us when you can.

Later,

Tom

Wifey and I stopped for an overnighter in Brunswick Georgia about 5 years ago.
Ate breakfast with a bunch of recruits going though that training.
I told wifey they were obviously just starting their schooling as they were all carrying "Red Rubber Training Guns"....

Hey thanks for the advice everyone

as forrest stated, spanish? good one, i couldnt speak english very well till i was three or four, but anyways Im goin in for customs and border protection officer, I just got accepted last week, now as for the nite life, im sure ill need a break here and there so it be nice... I just want to stay in shape and do what i gotta do to pass and get by, studyin aint a problem, heck i got a degree, they cant scare me with that...

Yup i have family in houston and Lufkin Tx as well, one of my uncles is a CBP officer up there as well, and Laredo wild and wooly? i suppose it has its moments... I was raised in LDO and far as i know born here as well..

finally i shall be at the FLETC till the end of june, i dont see spanish bein an issue whatsoever..

Of coarse ill hop online, but my job has been rapidly taken over by Nick (DisplacedTexan) and many others have better advice than I do, I will be sure to visit tho when i can...

PS do they allow cell phones? Id imagine afterhours they wouldnt be an issue...

Thanks!

Rick

Not far from their. Lots to do in Jacksonville,FL and Savannah, Ga. You will be about 45 mins. from Savannah. Come on up for St. Patricks day in Savannah March 17 on River Street and get some green beer. Last year they ran out of beer. You'll have a blast. If you do come up you better book your room in the next couple of weeks or you won't get one. Stay away from West of Martin Luther King St. Not a real nice place to be after dark.

Definitely go to Savannah and if you get time, Tybie Island too, if you're into history.

I don't know if you like racing, but Golden Isles speedway is almost a hlaf mile 4 wide dirt track that has some killer racing. The Big Boys were there not long ago. I mean super late models when I say that. That is if you are a racef an. The track is about 10 miles outside of Brunswick.
