I test them every year when replacing the batteries - - no, not by pushing the button. I use smoke for the test. So far all have reacted quickly and the same.

As a general rule Bob, yes, whether they are hard-wired, interconnected or stand alone, battery powered, their life expectancy is about 10 years. HOWEVER, some hard-wired units are of better quality than others and don't neccessarily need to be replaced as often. And it makes a difference whether they are ionization or photo-electric or a dual sensing combination.

Best course of action is to find a source you trust like an electrician that installs MANY systems or a fire alarm specialist that is honest and doesn't just want to install systems to make more money, and have your system inspected.

One other thing of interest; we have found over the years that the cans of 'smoke' will actually leave a film on the sensors within the detector after repeated uses, and makes them less sensitive to detecting actual smoke.

If it were me, I would have all the heads replaced with dual sensing technology, (not really that expensive).

FO, last year my wife did a program called 'Run Your Butt Off'. It was a gradual progression from couch potato to long run. She was really impressed with the results. It behooved me to also voice my approval for the results.

HOt dog - - you said the magic words - - dual sensing. You made me get my paperwork out from the original installation and that is what they are. I do not use the canned smoke to test - - I was told by the tech who tested the system about 2 years ago about that stuff. Good info - - - thanks and for the reminder. I had just replaced two of mine cuz one was chirping when you posted. Didn't have enough batteries at the time to finish the job. Good stuff.

Hey Shorts, just you and me tonight and I am about to pull the rip-cord. I guess it is up to you to tuck in the dragon and turn down the wick on the coal oil lamp. See y'all on the flip side. Don't forget to change your clocks and smoke alarm batteries.
