Re:Black Angus... It's What's For Dinner....
Cattle prices are way down, feeder steers back in the spring were selling up to .99-1.01 in the 500 weight now it is down to around the mid .70 range. Steers are bring the same price as heifers are.
I took a load of cows/calves in Sunday and they took the calves off the mothers and said to sell the calves as feeders and heifers by the pound. back in the spring a heifer with the calf on the side would have brougt in the $700-800 range per pair but not now.
The cattle buyers are blameing the farmers and saying that flooding the cattle market is driveing prices down.
With no rain during the summer and no hay the farmers had no chice but the sell early.

Do you own the entire farm CH? I have always wanted to own my own farm, and do that kind of work but it seems so risky these days, especially with the drought conditions etc. Is yours strictly a cattle ranch?

I live on the farm and take care of it but don't own it. I will one day have mine own, but right know trying to pay equipment off then I can buy my own farm.
The big thing is the equipment that is needed to farm cost just about what you will spend on buying a farm.

They will be cut the beginning of next week,
I use to rasie bottle cavles in High school and would cut the bull calves at 2-3 days old.
This calves will be sold in about 1-2 weeks stright to a cattle buyer.

Re:Black Angus... It's What's For Dinner....
why cut them then? 1 to 2 weeks left at the house?
personnally, i think bull calves should be cut at a young age, and given a impant (growth hormone). i have noticed the castrated ones gain more weight quicker than bulls do. take split tail off their mind, and all they think about is eating! and the implants held allot too.
i wouldnt waste time cutting those big boys, to me, it would take to much time to heal, and they would loose weight in the process.
but those arent your cows, so you dont really care what i think!
man. i could talk cows all day
