Champion Brands Blue Flame " Classic" Synthetic Diesel Motor Oil is a purpose built oil for pre-2007 diesel engines or newer diesels with the DPF removed. Not a regular additive pack like CI4 or CH4, but built with additives specifically to increase compression, HP & Torque for performance diesels. Also high in TBN. It is not a certified API oil and doesn't address specifically fuel economy or emissions. Used by many in tractor pulling and diesel drag racing. They are the offical oil of NADM. It has a place in the market - very unique.

The "Classic" can be used in performance enhanced diesels without DPF's for daily use. Champion also offers the Blue Flame in a API CJ/4 Synthetic oil in a 15w-40 and a 5w-40 for post 2007 diesels that have DPF's. Up to 5% fuel economy increase in the 5w-40 full synthetic. It's a very top tier synthetic diesel oil.

It has been proven in many many tests that the oil lubricity, even with "space age additives" account for less that 10% frictional loss in the engine. 5% gain in fuel economy by changing oil brands has never been proven or even possible. The only way you would get a 5% loss in economy would be to run NO OIL AT ALL. But then you would have Infinity fuel economy as you coast down the road the last mile.

Using full synthetic base stocks , typically group 4/PAO, with advance additives enhances viscosity properties and is proven to deliver better fuel economy. The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Federal Test Procedure confirms better fuel economy with full synthetics versus conventional petroleum based 15W-40 diesel oils. The difference is going from one extreme to another. Many top tier oil synthetic manufacturers make similar claims with their full synthetic 5w-40 diesel motor oils.

I still maintain that the frictional losses in the engine are only a fraction of the heat losses and efficiencies of the internal combustion engine. 5% fuel economy would be a stretch..
