Anyone know about log splitters
I am going to buy or build a log splitter and I am looking for some ideas. Who makes a good splitter and what have you guys made? I have a 3 clyinder Cummins that I might even use to power it just so I can say I have a diesel powered log splitter.
Build one. And build it so it splits in both directions, no wasted movement that way. A combination log lift and work table is always nice. Removable tongue so it can't be easily stolen. A vice somewhere to hold a chainsaw for sharpening. And make sure you build the hydraulic tank at least twice the size you think you need so as to allow for cooling of the hydraulic fluid.
That's what I built anyway. Used the basic design of the splitfires. http://www.split-fire.com/index.html

What I built:

I dont have any ics of my dads but he has one he bought used that I would asume is home made by the looks of it but its a great unit. It is hinged so you pull a pin and it stands on end, no lifting logs at all. When I was growing up he had one like pictured above that he made but it dident have a lift on it, thats what I was for
.
This fall he built one for his skidloader. Its not one to use to do all the spliting but to knock the big 4' diamater stuf down to managable sizes that you can get into the little one. It will knock a 4' dia log in half in one shot. Some people say its a bit big but it dont stop for nothing. I work for a company that builds hydraulic cylinders so I got him a used cylinder we had laying around. Its a 6" bore with 50ish inches of stroke. That gives him rite at a 41 ton spliter. He then found a 18" I beam that is 5/8" thick and 10 feet long for a fair price. Then a guy I work with built him the mounts and wedge and push plate. Whe it was all asembled the guy that did teh welding almost couldent lift it with his 6 series bobcat. Good thing dad has a HUGE skidloader.

This is my boy standing next to it. He is rite at 40" tall.
