opinions on gear splitters

Ive been reading up on gear splitters and wonder if anyone as experience with them. www.gearvendors.com This sounds like a pretty good unit. It reduces rpms by about 22% so instead of cruising at 80 mph @ 2250 it will go down to 1755 Rpm. It sounds like a great idea, especially for towing. I wonder if the mileage increase would be worth the $4000 price tag. I only get about 13 MPG so if i could increase that, it would be good.

I've got one with a 6sp, 3.55 rear, 1500 rpms @70mph, I got 21 miles per gal a while back on a 500 mile trip. But its worth it to me if only for the difference it made in the sound level in the cab, difference between night and day. Also makes sense, you do all those modification to increase torque, you need to take advantage of it by changing the final gear ratio.

The gear splitters are great if you're towing and need the extra gears but won't help your mpgs at all. Speed kills not rpms.
Brand new Gear Vendors units can be picked up on ebay for quite a discount.

after i posted, i did a search. I dont think this is something im gonna spend money on. I would rather save it for a killer new paint job. The hood and fenders are starting to get oxidized and burned. I told my wife im not driving a truck with a big ole' ugly spot on the hood. I'm thinking of going from red to yellow. that will be pretty expensive so i wont have all that money for a gear splitter. This is such a great resource to get input from so many different people. Thanks for the input from everyone. It may have saved me from a very expensive disapointment.
